how much do you tip valets for parking your car???

Just wondering.

Is it a percentage that you are paying to park...so if its $45 to park, you pay 10%?

Or is it a flat rate..like every time you deal with the valet, you give htem a couple of bucks?

We only valet at the casino -- we give $5 on the way in and $5 on the way out.  (it's free to valet there so it's just a random # we agree on.  I would give $10 both ways but Joe would give like $2 so we compromise at $5)!  LOL

At parking garages in Philly or DC I usually give about $2-3 when they park and retrieve my car.

At a nice place (hotel, restaurant), $5 when they retrieve the car. I think $3-$5 is fine.

Usually $3-5 on the way in and the same on the way out.  Unless we know them (as we do a few at places we go to a lot) then we leave more as our car is always left at the front so we don't have to wait. 

Tipping on the way in and out isn't necessary though but we like to think that our cars will be handled better if we give money when we drop it off.  My DH used to valet at a really nice hotel and has some interesting stories.  Better to be safe than sorry.
