Outer cervix 1 cm. inner cervix closed. WTH does that mean?

So I'm 34 weeks and dr. did internal yesterday.  She said the outer part of my cervix is one cm dialated but the inner part was still closed.  WTH?  I've never heard of this!  Either way, I'm not really worried.  I know that women can be 1 cm. for weeks.  I just didn't realize that there were two parts to your cervix???

  • Sounds like something it working for you. Maybe your cervix doesn't dilate evenly. Maybe it opens at the end first and then the inside? I'm not sure but some progress is better than none at all.

  • It's pretty common when your cervix is still long. You'll hear a lot of women who have concerns about PTL talking about "funneling" where their cervix is dilating on the inside but not on the outside. When your cervix is shorter things dilate a little more evenly.

  • When your cervix is long, it is like a tube with the outer end opening into your uterus and the inner end opening into your vagina. So, the part near your uterus is dilating, but the part near your vagina isn't quite there yet. Not all women dilate equally. With a short, 100% effaced, cervix its a non issue because at that point its basically flat. It makes sense if you think about how contractions "pull" open your cervix from the top and sides of your uterus.
  • The cervix is kinda like a tube, so 1 side can be open and the other is closed.  It's not just like a simple hole.
  • totally normal for a non-first time mom
  • thanks guys!
