Success after IF

did you eliminate caffeine during IVF or FET?

I am having a VERY hard time cutting out caffeine this time around.  When I did the IVF that resulted in our DD I cut it out altogether.  My FET is the end of the month or the beginning of next and I still have my coffee in the morning, a soda with dinner and hot chocolate in the later evening.  How bad is this?  I could use some advice as to what to do.  Thanks

Re: did you eliminate caffeine during IVF or FET?

  • You'll find just as many people who conceive using caffeine as those who conceive cutting it out.

I think it boils down to what's going to keep you most at peace during the roller coaster ride of treatments.

For ME?  That meant doing everything I could think of to help it work because I didn't want to get a BFN and look back to wonder "what if".  I have actually been off caffeine for 17 years because the women in my family are prone to cystic breasts and I want to avoid finding a lump at ALL costs but I did cut out SO many dietary things for IF treatment.  I cut out dairy, did only organic meats, only whole wheat - no bleached flour, and seriously cut out sugar.   "Extreme" made me feel empowered.

For others that means not going thru horrible withdrawl headaches and struggling with fatigue during an already stressful time.

Trust your gut on this one!

    GL with your decision!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

  • No, I did not eliminate caffeine. I did try to cut back and I did not drink alcohol. I did not cut back big time until I found out I had GD.

Best of luck with your FET! I hope this is it for you!

  • I eliminated it during  our IUI's but by the time IVF came around, I cheated a bit. I always limited it to one drink a day and tried to drink things with less caffein or at least avoid a double shot, etc.

  • I eliminated wine, coffee and diet sodas when I did the IUIs, IVF#1 and FET#1 which all were BFNs.    I kind of gave up on the restricting since it didn't feel like it was making a difference.  I had a few glasses of wine, my morning coffee and a few diet cokes during IVF#2 when I got  BFP with my DD who is now 18 months.  I recently did a FET (and did not give up coffee or diet soda) and I am 8 weeks pg.  So far so good.  :-)
  • I drank caffeine during my IVF.  I usually just have a cup with breakfast, and my clinic said that was fine, so that's what I did.  During stims, I also had champagne at a wedding.  I continued drinking coffee after my embryo transfer as well, and did drink coffee when I was pregnant (that's how I kept from getting constipated!).

    Good luck!

  • I didn't change anything about my diet during our IVF.  I have 1 Pepsi a day, so I just kept doing that.  I also did it throughout my pg and everything was fine.

If you think you'd feel better by eliminating it, I would.  But I don't know that it really makes that much of a difference.  That's just my opinion, obviously.  Not sure what the "facts" say!

  • I just replaced my caffeinated drinks with caffeine free. Tea in the morning, a soda on the weekend. I never gave up hot chocolate since it has very small amounts ( I didn't drink it every day though). You have to do what works best for you. I wouldn't advice going cold turkey though.

  • I cut it out right before my transfer... I drink decaf now... I started by going to half decaf and then full decaf so it was easier and I was still drinking coffee...  I don't know how much it really matters (my ivf nurse told me I could have 1 small cup a day) but I have guilt over it... I can't do it just because of the what-ifs in my head....
