Success after IF

Help:Did I harm my DD? BF'ing related

I am really beating myself up here, please no flames.  I have been EBF'ing my almost 8 month old and we started solids at almost 5 months.  My Pedi never, ever mentioned vitamin drops for DD, not even once.  I didn't think to ask since I thought she was getting everything she needed from me.  I saw some girls talking about these drops on here so I called my Pedi and asked if she should be taking them and she said yes.  WTH?  DD is average in weight, height, head circ, and meeting her milestones.  Please tell me that she isn't going to suffer from not getting them.  Also, my diet isn't stellar.  Any reassurance would be helpful.  I don't usually panic, but I am pissed that my Pedi, didn't say anything in the 5 visits we have had with her.

Re: Help:Did I harm my DD? BF'ing related

  • Neither of my boys would take them (taste issues) and while I'm their mom and obviously biased I think they're both BRILLIANT!!!

I told my pedi that they wouldn't take them and he just told me to be sure to work at getting the appropriate vitamin content in their diets once they were on real food.

Of ALLLL the things I've felt guilt over as a mom this wasn't one of them!

    She's fine.

    I promise!

Heck.... these vitamins didn't even exist when our parents were kids and while I'm sure there are some exceptions I think most of them turned out OK, right?

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

  • Pediatricians now recommend giving your child vitamin D drops (or a multivitamin with vitamin D, but it is really the vitamin D that they need), when you are bfing.  It is a fairly new recommendation and my sister didn't do it for her now 5 year old, and she is perfectly fine.  We started doing it with my son, giving him poly-vi-sol (a vitamin), but it made him spit up like crazy - so he wasn't keeping it down anyways.  So we decided to just bring him out in the sun during the day (only works during the summer around here)  Then we changed to formula and he didn't need it anymore (it is in the formula).

I am sure your DD will be fine - especially since you live in TX - she probably gets some vitamin D from the sun anyways!

  • She's fine...don't worry about it.

Caroline has had ONE dose of vitamins in her whole life, and she's no worse for wear.  My pedi thinks they are pretty much totally unecessary.

  • I'm so glad you posted this. I forget to give DS his on most days and I've been stressing about it.

  • It's really only for the Vit D and Kellymom has lots of links about the bioavailability of Vit D in your milk.  Really it's not a big deal at all.  Don't worry :) C is absolutely fine.

  • It's really only the Vitamin D that's an issue since you're BFing, and you had some warm weather months in there so she probably got plenty of Vitamin D just by being outside!  It's still a good idea for her to start Vitamin D orally, especially since it's winter, but she's totally fine, I'm sure.  Feel free to PM me if you want more info on buying Vitamin D. :)

  • You guys are wonderful, thank you so much!  We tried it tonight mixed in her food.  It was the first time I thought she was going to throw up, so we are going to pump the brakes and just do Vitamin D drops.

    Thank you again!

  • I was really bad about giving the Tri-Vi-Sol until she took a bottle every day and also needed Zantac (then she would get a medicine bottle).  I'm sure she is fine.  :)

Now DD gets Tri-Vi-Fluor because we have a well with low fluoride, so I am more conscientious about that, but right around a year, she decided that she will take any vitamins/meds by mouth without a peep - she just opens her mouth like a baby bird.  :)  So it's not as big a deal as when she would spit it out and cry.
