Random: Why do we pee in a cup every appointment?

I guess I could google this - but why not ask here.  I'm never told the results of my urine test.  Is it to check to make sure I don't have an infection or something like that?

  • yep...they check for UTI and other possible infections.  you'll only get called if your levels are raised indicating so.

  • I only had to pee in a cup once, at my initial visit to confirm pregnancy!

  • Like PP said, they check for UTI, protein and sugar in your urine. It's so much fun, isn't it?

  • My doc said they check for proteins in the urine?

  • They check for protein, which is a sign of pre-e. It's important to get you pee tested!

  • Thanks, ladies!  I figured there had to be a reason.  Guess all my proteins are a-okay since it's never been mentioned in my appointments!

  • I work at on OB/GYN office. We dip the urine with a dipstick to check for several things:

bacteria - could indicate infection, blood - indicate infection/kidney stones, protein - indicate pre-eclampsia, ketones - indicate poor nutrition, glucose - indicate gestational diabetes. Lots of important stuff!

I've only had to pee in a cup once, too, and that was at my first prenatal visit. I wonder why some docs are okay skipping this since it sounds important?

  • I don't have to pee in a cup at every appointment.  This is my 3rd baby and 3rd OB (three different states), I only had to do that with DD2.

  • I've only done it twice... once to confirm pregnancy, and once now.

It seems over the top to check once a month in early pregnancy. I guess it's normal, but I hate peeing in a cup, so I'm glad my doc doesn't make me do it so often.

  • Quoting my doctor from my last appointment:

"Your pee looks great.  These are the kind of compliments you can get used to when you come see me".

My doctor has a fantastic sense of humor.  I don't know why I think he's so funny, but hopefully it keeps up Stick out tongue

I PIAC at my first appointment.  I expected to do the same at every other appointment too, but the nurse always just asked me to empty my bladder and I never understood why.  So I never peed in the cup.  And then at my last appointment a new nurse was kind of snippity with me because I had never PIAC since my first appointment.  Hello!!  The other nurse always just told me to "empty my bladder".  How was I supposed to know that meant "pee in the tiny plastic cup"?

I can't believe the nurse never followed up with "Hey, where's that pee I asked you for?"  At my doctor there's a little door you have to put it in when you're done and someone's always there waiting because I hear it get taken every time.  I think my nurse always says something like "I need your pee."

There is a little door that you slide the pee through.  No one ever said anything to me!

  • Yeap-or at least at my doctors office, I do. It goes- weight, blood pressure, and pee in a cup :D haha They told me they only call me if something is wrong.
  • I get the same thing at the OB - weight, blood pressure, pee in a cup.  We slide ours through a little door in the bathroom too.
