What has your doc said about this pregnancy and your chances of going in to labor on your own???
I was barely a fingertip dialated at about 11 days overdue when I went in to be induced. They were never able to start the induction b/c DS went in to distress due to the cord being wrapped too tight--so we had the c/s.
I just wonder what the stats are on this. How much I'd love to do all I can to VBAC, if the odds are against me I'd rather at least be well-prepared for a RCS (if that makes sense).
Also--do they start doing internals any sooner with your second child??
Re: If you didn't make ANY progress on your own before being induced....
I'm not a medical doctor but I wonder if since the cord was wrapped so tight it prevented him from descending to place the necessary pressure to start dilating your cervix.
I know there are online calculators that may give some sort of statistic but there is nothing to say that you wouldn't be able to go on your own...since every pregnancy and labor is so different.
It's good to prepared for both scenarios but if you are serious about VBAC you should research things that people have done to help go on their own like EPO, RRL, exercises for optimum positioning, etc.
They don't start doing internals sooner and early internals are NOT a good indication of what's to come. I was dilated to 3 at my 37 week appt....I was overdue and induced and ended up with c-section. You can go from 0 to dilated quickly right before labor and having a doctor check you sooner can give them a "reason" that your VBAC won't be successful.
It's a good idea to be prepared for a RCS either way IMO.
My doc is starting internals at 37 weeks and will start sweeping the membranes weekly at that point if/when I have dilated enough to get in there. Last time I didn't have that done until I was 40 weeks. I didn't go into labor on my own and was induced 10 days past EDD at 3cm.
TTC #1 Cycle 14 - IUI#1=BFN, IUI#2=BFP | TTC #2 Cycle 8=BFP!!

I agree. It's hard to guess what your chances are because for all we know, you'd have gone into labor the next day on your own, kwim?
We don't do internals at all here until you're in labor, regardless of which child it is. I still don't understand why they're so common in the States since they don't mean anything.
Amen! The only reason I know of to get an internal is to determine a bishop's score prior to inducing... and if you've already had a c/s, you're not being induced, so what's the point? We've all heard stories about women who are 3cm dilated at 37 weeks and walk around for a month before actually going into labor - it doesn't mean a thing! My personal theory is that OBs do them so that women thing the OB is actually doing something.
That said, I did have an internal. At 40wk my cervix was so high and tight that the OB could barely reach it. I still had a successful vbac 9 days later.
For my firsst, I made no progress on my own prior to being induced and only made it to 7 on pitocin before allowing a c/s.
