How many wipes?

Do I need for a newborn? I was thinking about sewing my own, but then I came back into reality and admitted to myself that that would probably not happen any time soon. But to buy them seems pricey... $1 each? I am looking at Grovia wipes, and thinking 24 to start. That's not a lot, but is it enough to get by?

I don't know how many you need, so I'm going to lurk for that info, but I wanted to tell you that some people also use cheap-o baby washcloths.

I think 36 is a good number. Enough that you can use more than one for the messier diapers and not run out. I have 48 so that I can keep a stash in the diaper bag. Mine are 5" x 8" so I can make one fold for extra clean area. You can probably make 24 work if you are washing ever other day, especially if they are a larger wipe that you can fold to use every bit of it.

The cheapest washcloths I've seen are about $1 each too. I'm in Canada, so online shopping is limited (given the cost of shipping).

We have 48 of the "good" wipes (GMD) and 24 of the "bad" wipes (Kissaluvs).  I rarely have to dig into the Kissaluv wipes- they're mostly for the diaper bag.  I prefer the GMD wipes so those are what I tend to grab first and if I wash every 2 days I don't run out of them.

I use wipes I bought at Target.  They were pretty inexpensive...they were like $4 for a pack of 5 or 6.  I don't know if you have Target in Canada.  But that's where my wipes came from!  We probably have about 30 of them but I'm hte only one that uses them.  Both my mom (who cares for my kids) and DH use disposibles and we also use disposables when away from home.
