OK--I have three docs.  Two of which aren't crazy about VBAC but would let it happen as long as I go on my own--they won't do pitocin or anything like that.  OK I get it.  But the third will absolutely NOT even try VBAC (I find it that this is the only female of the group too--you'd think she'd get it).....

So WHAT IF......I go in to labor on my own---labor at home as much as possible and go in hopefully dialated at least halfway...... (yes, I might be dreaming here).....they basically said if she's on call it's straight to C-section...but they can't MAKE you do that, can they????   I mean, could I just refuse to see her and say I want a house doctor or something??? 

I'm not opposed to a RCS--but obviously if I go in to labor on my own and can VBAC that would be ideal......  and that is the hope.

No one can FORCE you into surgery.  But if she is there and you make a stink, you might find yourself signing a lot of legal paperwork because you are going "AMA".  I also don't think they can turn away a woman in labor.  Not sure if you can request another doctor either.

If you have an appointment with one of the pro-VBAC doctors, can you ask them how they think you should handle the situation?  I am surprised that the entire practice isn't on board with their policies.  I had a friend who hated one doctor in her practice who was (surprise, surprise) the one on call when she went into labor.  She threw a fit and refused to see him and they called in one of the other doctors.  Not sure if they would always do this- I thought it was a little extreme since she didn't like his personality but he was a fine doctor.  AND it was Christmas day.  Sort of cruel to call someone in who wasn't otherwise scheduled.

So, long story short- talk to one of the other guys.  I wouldn't feel comfortable in a practice where they all weren't agreeing on something together.

I agree that you should talk to all 3 docs, preferably at the same time and ask why they have such different views/policies.  If you don't feel supported by your medical team in your desire to VBAC, is it an option for you to switch practices?  I have many couples who take my Bradley class come to find out after they have asked questions that their OB is not fully on board with their birth plan and they switch midway through pregnancy.

I agree...I find it odd that if they're in a practice together, that they don't all agree or have the same policies.  My practice is 3 OB's and 2 midwives, and they all know that I would like to attempt a VBAC and they're all on board with it.  They have weekly meetings where they discuss issues with patients...I already know that they'll be discussing my "case" once I hit 36 weeks to make sure they're all on the same page when it comes to my care.

I don't think I'd be comfortable staying with a practice where they didn't all agree or have the same plan.

I've searched high and low for real VBAC friendly docs and there just aren't any near me.  The closest hospital that is VBAC friendly is more than an hour away---at least.  Our state has high malpractice insurance rates---so they don't want to chance it is what it comes down to. 

The two docs that are "ok" with it---I wouldn't say they are super supportive but will let it happen if you are a candidate for it, which I should be.  BUT they won't let you go too long--there is no waiting game.  They just keep telling me the effects of VBAC on the baby are very dangerous if it goes wrong.

Well you know I'm driving an hour to get to West Sub (switched at 24w), so that would be my first recommendation!    Otherwise do you have a doula that you're working with that can help you navigate the system a little better?   Did you end up going to OMG or someplace completely different?  Was UIC a possibility for you? It's so frustrating that there are such limited VBAC resources in our state and near Chicago!

What burb are you near?  I'm in the far south burbs---and any of the hospitals are so far--especially if during any type of rush hour.  Are you working with OMG?

I'm in Aurora, but going to Oak Park.  I know OMG is better than nothing, but I'm going with the West Suburban Midwives to give myself the best shot this time around.  The midwives said they have actually had people drive from WI to Oak Park for their VBACs!  Some people will get a hotel and labor near the hospital too.  And keeping my fingers crossed that I don't need to get to the hospital during rush hour, which is why I'm getting a doula to come to the house as well just in case it doesn't look like I'll make it to West Sub.  That's why I was wondering if you looked at UIC b/c I would think that might be easier for you to get to since it's right off the expressway.

I just wanted to chime in that I had a really great experience with the UIC midwives! I showed up pushing, but all my prenatal care was terrific, and the main MW I saw was very laidback about the fact that I was post-dates.

It sounds like laboring at home is your best bet - I would definitely ask about that third doctor, and definitely consider a doula to help you stand your ground (not that she can directly advocate for you at the hospital, but as another person who knows the ins and outs and can help you and DH navigate the system). It's such a shame it's so freaking hard to VBAC.

Did they mention to you any of the risks of a repeat CS?  This is what drives me nuts about some doctors.  My midwife was great about going over the pros and cons of both.  And tell them to check with the AMA which also supports VBACs.
