For those of you that had additional 'help" getting pregnent, how long did you try on your own before seeking the help? Also, what is a logical next step in the process? I am completely clueless! We are coming up on one solid year of trying with no luck. Part of me wants to just keep trying like we are and part of me wants to see about further steps. I am not 100% on board with fertility treatments if that is what it comes to. We are about 50/50 when it comes to adoption vs fertility.
Thanks!
Re: How Long?
I would at least consider going in for a consultation. See what your options are, talk to your dr. I know it's easy when you're talking about IF to immediately start thinking about IVF and adoption, but there are SO many other steps before you would get to that point. Things you might be totally comfortable with. It doesn't hurt to just discuss it.
Have you been charting, using opks, things like that? Have your cycles been regular? If everything seems to be ok with you, the likely first steps would be a SA and HSG. If not, they'd probably start by running some bloodwork, just to make sure everything's what it should be. You might have something like a thyroid issue that needs to be treated regardless. You just never know, and I don't think the preliminary stuff is a bad idea at all if you'be been trying this long.
GL in whatever you decide!
After going off BC, my periods were not normal. I waited about 6 months before seeing my ob/gyn. She started me on Femara to regulate my periods. After another 7 or 8 months went by with nothing, we went to see an RE.
I would see an RE to make sure nothing is wrong. They started off with some tests for us (like a HSG and sperm analysis that my ob/gyn had not suggested and instead just put me on Femara. Which I did need, but it would have been nice to see if there were any other issues first)
GL!
We didn't seek treatment, but it took us a year to get pregnant. It was my 12th cycle when we finally saw a positive - so it was like a year and a few weeks. If we hadn't gotten pregnant that cycle I would have been at the doctor - and so would DH. Oh, I was 26/27 and DH was 27/28.
Good luck!
We have been ttc for 14 cycles now. When we first started TTC I saw my OBGYN and she would have been willing to do some preliminary tests then, but we weren't in a hurry so we didn't. I saw my OBGYN the last week in December. She ordered Day 21 labs for me (progesterone, prolactin, and thyroid) and a sperm analysis for DH. They both came back looking good. If I'm not pregnant this cycle, which according to a HPT today I am not, then I will have an HSG which is an xray dye test to check for blockages in the fallopian tubes.

I completely understand the frustration! DH & I were coming up on a year, and my regular doctor told me to "relax, keep trying, it'll happen." Not helpful! I was really scared of seeing a specialist.
Anyway, I was reading up on infertility on webmd (obviously I wasn't relaxing) and found a reference to www.conceptionkit.com. It's an FDA approved medical device which is basically an at-home do-it-yourself intracervical insemination. You get a 3 month kit for $350. DH thought it was a complete waste of time and money... but I wanted to try something!
I got pregnant on the first try and had a healthy full-term baby (now almost 2). And since I had 2 months of the kit left, we used it to get pregnant again. This time it worked on the 2nd try (I'm 29 weeks now).
I think I wasn't getting pregnant because the sperm weren't making it to the egg. The sperm just needed a boost and to be pointed in the right direction
. No idea if this will be helpful for you, but if you have a mild fertility problem it might work and be less stressful than seeing a specialist. Obviously, if you aren't ovulating or have blocked tubes this won't work. Good luck!
