Is this unprofessional??

I work as a dietitian in an acute care hospital.  I can wear either business casual clothes or scrubs and always wear a white lab coat.  I switch between the two depending on my mood.  Yesterday I wore a black dress.  The dress has shrunk a little bit and I felt as if it is too short.  I wore a pair of gray leggings underneath the dress and a pair of black ugg type boots.  I have wore this outfit probably 3 other times this winter.  This morning my boss said "someone from HR" complained about my outfit and that it was unprofessional.  He has made comments before about my shoes looking like slippers and I feel as if it was him who didn't like my outfit.  It is the style now and that is what I told him.  I also told him that it was a dress and what would someone say if I wore stockings instead of leggings.  He didn't answer me.  Just wondering what your thoughts are on leggings and the workplace.

  • I think Uggs don't belong in the workplace. Leggings either. IMO.

  • I may have been crossing the line with the Uggs but it is a very causal enviroment that I work in. Yeah I probably should have wore my knee high "hooker" boots instead of the Uggs.  I am sure he wouldn't have had a problem with them since he asked me why I wasn't wearing them instead.

  • If your butt was covered with the dress I think a dress with leggings is appropriate for a casual office.  But, if your boss has said something to you about your clothes he is either a pig or expects you to dress more business appropriate than business casual.

  • As long as your butt was covered, I think leggings are fine. I don't think Uggs belong in the workplace, IMO, no matter how casual your office is. Maybe next time wear a ballet flar with that outfit.

  • that outfit would be fine in my office.  But we have people that wear shorts and flip flops at times in the summer (not always, but still)
  • I guess leggings don't seem much different to me than wearing stockings, as long as your butt is well covered, like everyone else said.

  • I think it depends on the environment you work in and what your employers definition of "business casual" is. Some people have different interpetations -esp depending on their age .For instance at my company in a corporate environment, we are business casual, but it's more along the lines of casual/professional.  Jeans just became acceptable on Fridays. I would not wear leggings or UGG's to this job ever. However, at one of my old companies (corporate) we were business casual too - but you could wear jeans when you wanted, even flip flops, just not on days you had big meetings. In that environment, leggings and UGGS would be perfectly acceptable. It just depends on your companies culture and what they expect.

This is so true. In my culture you would be in the HR faster then you think if you wore Uggs to work. Even though I come from a small island the rules are strict. I mean you can't get your car registered if it had a dent in it or was more then 3 colors. Imagine that.  But as we all know the standards for men are so different. Our "professional" men wear pink Yellow Jackets, pink Bermuda Shorts and navy blue long socks as business attire.  smh.

  • Forgot to tell you guys this is the same person who said I couldn't wear a garnet pair of FSU scrubs with a small seminole logo on them b/c he compared it to wear a t-shirt that says Budwiser or some other alcoholic beverage.  REALLY?!?!  Plenty of people wear college related scrubs around here.  I still wear them b/c I totally disagree with him on that one and he doesn't say anything.

  • Leggings aren't business casual. Neither are Uggs.

  • I am not sure how leggings are any different from tights under a dress, especially since you can't see the bottom if you have boots on.

In a medical environment many people wear Clarks and I don't see how Uggs are very different from a pair of clogs.
