How old was your LO when you started and when did you start to see improvement?
Just curious. Andrew has been in for about 2 months at once a week. He started at 19 months adjusted and he is over 21 adjusted. He hasn't made any new sounds or words. This week he's started talking a little more often (babbling the same 2 sounds), so I'm hoping that's a good sign.
I know I should expect slow progress and every kid is different, but I still want to ask.
ST suspected apraxia, in which case I know progress could be very slow, but it's too soon to tell definitely.
Re: for those in ST
Layla has been is ST for 4mths, twice a month. We started at 18mths. We have seen some improvment, but not really with the therapist. Our ST is very laid back, doesn't push too hard. But she gave us lots of things to do with Layla day to day that seems to have helped. We are starting this week to go to a group Speech Therapy on Fridays.
I know this is gonna sound bad, I have seen more improvment for letting Layla watch TV, like Sesame Street, Sid the Science Kid, Word World, and Super Why. Sometimes we sit and watch others we just have it for background. They are on public tv here. You may be able to check them out at www.pbskids.org
Yeah, I just can't do Barney. But the others are not so bad. I do limit them. Our ST also said anything that is repetitive is good for language development. Dr. Suess books are that way, and Eric Carle is also.
I also try to get Layla to look at me when I am talking to her or trying to get her to say something. I point to my mouth and say the words, she does this now when she say certain things. With Layla it is a fine balance with trying to get her to say something and not pushing too hard. Push too hard and she just quits.
