Success after IF

Think my D&C pathology results be invalid b/c of the twin thing?

morbid topic, my apologies, but I just realized this tonite, and of course, am freaking out.
On u/s just prior to loosing Baby A... Baby B was "no longer visible" and had been passed for about 4 weeks.  We did the D&C and opted to have the tissue tested for issues, but now I have NO idea if the twin thing will come into play or not.

I suspect they just take a "nip" or two of tissue and test that? And what's to say they don't pick up a piece of Baby B's placenta or tissue???????

I've already prepared myself to get inconclusive results with this whole mess, but now I'm worried that even if we GET results they're be skewed. I also know that when I call my Dr. Hee in the morning about this, I'll get a huge "dunno" or a flubbed answer. Any ideas or guesses?

thanks. le sigh.

  • I am not sure. But I do hope you can get some answers.

  • I may be wrong but I seem to remember that they can tell gestational age by some of the cells. I remember my RE saying something about this. So morbid, not fun to say, but baby A was big enough they should know easily that the tissue is from him.

  • I think they will be able to be sure the tissue they collect is from baby A - given how far along you were when this happened.  I think you will get an answer - it may be inconclusive but if it is - it's because it truly is - not due to skewed results.  But I hope it is NOT inconclusive - and gives you some kind of information.  Something.  Hang on T.  Have they indicated when they will be in touch with results?
    Wheee!

  • I'll get the results within a week to two. ;-(

The only good news I have right now is there is really only one REALLY good immunologist around here that is not just "dog & cat dander" allergist doc, and when I got one doc to call this doc buddy of his (I may or may not have gone apechit on the receptionist and she may or may not have rushed into doc's office saying a BSC crazy lady is crying on the phone, lol) I was told the next appt was late March. I may or may not have cried in excess again (I need to take more ativan before making phone calls, this is apparent, ha) the scheduler kindly said she would "see what she could do."

The call came late today, I have an appt with this infamous doc Thurs morning ;-)  He may not be able to tell me what auto immune stuff I'm dealing with, and I don't suspect he knows what it has to do with pregnancy loss, but it's a step somewhere. Anywhere. But where I am.

  • If Baby B had passed and was no longer visible, there should not have been any tissue for them to "grab."

I am sure that they were able to accurately get the correct tissue from Baby A.

Not sure if they gave you a timeline, but just as a forewarning, our results took almost 3 weeks. I guess they actually "grow" the tissue so they have to wait several weeks for it to grow and get big enough to make some conclusions.

    Hang in there!

  • I don't have any answers to any of the questions but wanted to lend my support and tell you I am here, thinking of you. I hope Thursday brings you a step closer to knowing what the f is going on.
  • I agree with PP's. There was enough time between the two losses that if there was anything from both, they should be able to tell the difference. This is my non-medical opinion of course. I really do hope they can tell you some answers.

I'm very happy to hear about this appt! I think it's got to be auto immune based on everything that you've shared. I really, really hope you get some answers or at least referred to someone who can find the answer!

  • Thinking of you sweetie!  I hope you get some concluvsive results.
  • When I had my D&C, my results were that there was no tissue consistent with pregnancy which means that I must have passed it between my ultrasound the night before and the procedure that morning (I think I know when it was and told my OB but he wanted to proceed just in case there was anything left).  So to me that says that they test it all.  I'm sure they will know that you had a twin pregnancy and test accordingly.

  • Your Dr can always call the pathologist and give them a heads up or call after the fact if they are inconclusive and explain the situation and ask them to look at everything again.  Our office does this all the time with endometrial biopsy, if we don't think the results we get are consistent with what we sent we get the path Dr on the phone and discuss the situation.

I'm glad that you were able to get a sooner appointment with immunologist, too much ativan before might not have gotten you the same result.  I really hope you get some answers.

  • I agree with everyone who said that if the twin wasn't visible anymore on the ultrasound then I'm certain they will be able to test the correct tissue.  I will be hoping for some conclusive results for you.

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
