Parenting after 35

standing up in crib all the sudden

My LO is almost 11 months and has just started crawling and standing up in his crib this week!  We dropped the mattress so he is safe.  It's always been pretty easy putting him in for naps and bedtime but now he stands right up and cries after I've shut his door.  I've been going in and laying him down repeatedly until he's too tired out to get back up. Should I continue to do this or just leave him to setlle himself back down?  He really screams so that latter won't be easy for me.  Tonight I waited until he was sooo tired to put him in and I didn't have this problem. Suggestions?

  • Oooh.

Nothing but sympathy here, I'm afraid.  Can you sit next to the crib and read to him for a while?

This is what we do for Mikey.

Leah just started this last week.  When I put her to bed wants to either sit up or stand up.  I've been sitting by the crib and it's helped a bit.  She knows how to lay herself back down but doesn't do it.  I don't think she wants to miss anything going on while she's sleeping.

  • When Sarah did that, we'd just leave the room and she'd lay down and go to sleep. We wouldn't lay her down as she would just get back up again. But she also didn't usually cry, or just cried out for a second until we were out of the room and then settled down.

We had to sit and read for a little while with DS.  Within a week he was OK to lay down by himself.  Good luck!!

This. Staying in her room just prolongs it for us. If she cries, it's usually just for a minute or two.

  • In the early going, definitely tire him out good before bedtime.  Eventually he'll get the idea of laying down and going to sleep, but there'll be some rough nights, for sure.
