How to store prefolds?

I think someone asked this a while back (Lori maybe?), but I'm beginning to think about how to store Hank's infant-sized prefolds.  I'd like to keep them around for Baby #2 so they won't be used again until possibly 2013.  I'm concerned about them getting moldy.  It often rains where I live and all of our closets have an ample supply of Damp Rid in them.  Any ideas?  TIA!

Re: How to store prefolds?

  • I stored ours in big rubbermaid containers in our basement and I just pulled them out for DS. They aren't moldy or anything. We have a dehumidifier going and it's not damp down there though...

  • I don't remember if I ever read a definitive answer for this but I can tell you what I did for our infant prefolds and NB fitteds.  I "stripped" the diapers by doing some hot, no detergent washes (grandma actually did this in her non-HE machine).  I let them air dry outside on a nice day then I stored them in a cotton pillow case (rather than plastic that doesn't breath) and put it in the storage closets in the basement.  It's a little damp down there, but not too bad since it's finished and has forced air.  If I remember I might air them on the line each year but I'm not too worried about it.  Don't plan on considering TTC until 2012 or 13 so they will be stored for 3 years.
  • I just washed and dried ours and packed them up with the covers that were small and placed them in the large bin with other NB, 0-3 and 3-6 clothese. We store them in the garage, which is not temp controlled. Hopefully this is okay. We hope to have baby #2 in May or June 2012 so they will have been stored about 2 years by then. I might check on them next time we're in our storage area to see if I need to move them somewhere else.
