Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Local anesthesia w/D&C

I just found out today that after taking 2 doses of Cytotec that I need to have a D&C which is scheduled for next Thurs.  My dr told me I will be very groggy b.c I am getting local anethesia with IV.  They will just make me comfortable and then give me a shot in my cervix to numb it.  Has anyone else had this done?  What was your experience?  I am so nervous.

Re: Local anesthesia w/D&C

  • I can't respond to your exact question, but you will not be unconscious with a local.  I think under the circumstances a general would be preferable.  Otherwise it would be possible for you to remember everything that happens.

And I am so sorry for your loss.

  • I tried the Cytotec too and it didn't work for me either time I used it.

I am a little confused though...but its probably just me. Are you having local or general anesthesia? I thought general anesthesia would be with an IV and local would only be where they numb the area?

I was under general anesthesia for mine, they hooked me up to an IV and completely knocked me out. I can say it was completely painless. I woke up groggy and slept the rest of the day. I never needed any pain medication, not even OTC stuff.

Sorry I am not much help! But I hope it goes quickly and painlessly for you. I'm sorry you are going through this.

  • So, local anesthesia alone implies use of local anesthetic by itself (for example, injection of a local block that will block sensation of pain at the cervix).   The IV sedation that would potentially leave you "groggy," would be medication for pain and anxiety through the IV line (usually administered by an anesthesiologist).  While it is possible to do a D&C with local and sedation, more commonly, it is done under general anesthesia, where you have a complete loss of consciousness.

Usually the duration of general anesthesia for these procedures is very short and assuming you are otherwise healthy, general anesthesia for a D&C would usually be pretty straightforward.

  • I just had my D&C first thing this morning.  I have to say that I was nervous about the general anesthesia.  The doctors told me that their standard method was via general anesthesia.  It worked so easily and I felt like recovered very quickly and comfortably.  Having gone through this now, I would tell my closest friends to do general over local.  Of course, there may be other reasons why they are suggesting local (e.g. unique health history, needs etc. that should also be considered).  Good luck to you in your choice.
  • get general so you wont feel or remember anything!!I just had one last week.  And ask for pain drugs at the end so you are comfortable before going home. My doc wanted to do it in her office with some suction thing, I said hell no.  I get cramps and pains really easily so I had to be knocked out..

  • My dr said that local is better b.c with general you have to be at the hospital longer b.c it is more of a recovery.  I beleive that the IV will make me somewhat sleepy but I wont be out completely.  This way she can give me the shot in my cervix and I wont feel it.  Thanks for everyones help.  I will be nervous about this until it is over.
