How do you store legos?

My almost 4-year-old and I put together his Buzz Lightyear Lego spaceship today.  It was fun and I'd like to get him some more sets.  Once we have more sets, though, I am wondering how we are going to keep track of all those little pieces.  Any great ideas?

 Thanks :)

Re: How do you store legos?

  • I have a bin for each set. I also have a bin for "like" sets. For example, he received two similar emergency vehicle sets so those I grouped together. I also keep the instructions with each respective set. "sets" are a PITA, LOL!
  • I use those clear boot/shoe boxes from The Container Store. Easy snap-on lids, stackable, different sizes, inexpensive....we use them for all of his things, they are great.

  • I put each set in a gallon ziplock (the slider tops that the kids can do) then all of them are in a tub (about double shoebox-size).

Then we have the one lego tub with just the generic building pieces.

  • Finished projects are in a large translucent tub.  DS is careful to put them back in so they don't break.  Unfinished ones stay in their original box / bag.  And then we have a blue tub of non-specific ones that he can build more creatively with.
