Success after IF

WWYD re: sleep position

So long story short: DD has been tummy sleeping for a while now because that is how she likes to sleep. At one of her early pedi visits one of the docs said that it was ok as long as there was so soft, fluffy bedding. He said that even though back to sleep is what is best, it's also important for everyone to get sleep. It was so bad in the beginning that DH and I took turns sleeping downstairs with DD while she either slept in her swing or on one of us in the recliner.

So this leads up to yesterday: We had DD's 2 month visit and we saw the other pedi in the group. DH happened to mention to her that DD was tummy sleeping and the doc got upset. "No, no...I don't even want to hear that! Back to sleep, back to sleep!" (she didn't yell but was pretty aggravated). She didn't even seem to care when we told her DD just doesn't like sleeping that way. So being good parents we gave it a try last night. I don't know if it was the shots she got (oral rotavirus, HiB and DTaP..which they warned us could make her feverish and aggitated) or the fact we put her on her back, but after going down at 1:30 I had to go into her room at 3:30, 4:30 and then 5 when she was finally awake, awake and not just fussing. Then when she went back down at 5:30ish after eating DH had to go check on her again, not sure what time because we were both half awake but it was definately not more than 2 hours later.

I just don't know what to do tonight! I know she like sleeping on her tummy, but now that she is sleeping longer DH and I both get nervous when we don't hear from her. But I also can't take another night of reverting back to sleeping for only a few hours at a time. Now I know this could all be from the shots and tonight or tomorrow she could do just fine sleeping on her back. Ugh..I really just don't know!

No she doesn't like to be swaddled. So she can push herself up and lift her head off the mattress becasuse her hands are free.

Swaddling was the only thing that worked for us at that age.  They will definitely fight it but once they give in ... they sleep great.  Maybe try a different swaddle?  The Miralce Blanket worked well for DS.  Once they can roll over you have to stop but that keeps them on their backs.

Hmm...maybe we will have to try it again. Hopefully it will help. Thanks.

  • We also thought that Jake initially hated being swaddled. He like to sleep with his hands out up by his face..but then he started to constantly wake himself up just like you said. So, I went out and got a new swaddle..I think we ended up with the Kapaddumous ones and trying it once I was sold. He like it TIGHT and almost like a straight jacket. He would sleep like a "baby" when we put him in it every night..

Now, I will say it did take us a long time for him to give up the swaddle..he just loved it so much. But once he started rolling and wanting to sleep on his side we had no choice...It was 3 bad nights and now he can sleep with out it..Still like to be "zipped" into something so we use sleep sacks to get the same effect.

I have also meet some other mommies who let there babies sleep on there tummies. My one gf is a pedis nurse and her DH is a doctor and she was totally comfortable with her son sleeping on his tummy.
