Azithromycin

Has anyones LO been prescribed azithromycin for an ear infection? Did your LO experience any negative side effects from it?

My LO has had a severe ear infection for over 2 weeks now. We were given amoxicillin, but it did not work and are now trying azithromycin. I am nervous about this medication for some reason.

Re: Azithromycin

  • It's fine, it's a "super" drug which is why it's only a 5 day. Usually works great but the downside with stronger drugs are stronger side effects, mostly GI issues. Upset tummy, vomitting, or diarrhea are likely... but dealing with that may be easier than dealing with a nasty ear infection and it's only 5 days.

  • DD's never had it but I have a penicillin allergy and so they always Rx the Z-pak (azithro) for me.  I always take it with food, like pp said b/c it has given me an upset stomach when taken on an empty stomach.  And about a quarter of the time it gives me a yeast infection (doubtful it will happen to your LO but I'm just giving you my full experience!).  I would encourage you not to be any more nervous about this one than you are with other anti-biotics. If anything I find it to be much more convenient and works faster. GL!

  • DS was prescribed azithromycin after his amoxicillin didn't clear up an ear infection, and he had an allergic reaction to omnicef. The azythromycin cleared it up in no time. He threw up some on day 4, but nausea is a normal side effect because its so strong.
  • I just got it for myself for a wicked chest cold. It actually doesnt do much for me, but its about all i can get right now. Its just a z-pack...i usually have to have a second pack to get any results.

No, my LO has never been on it but I'm a pedi nurse and I've seen lots of patients taking it and those are there biggest complaints.
