xp from 2nd tri: Choroid plexus cysts

I thought more people would have experienced this over here, so I thought to ask it here.  At my doctor's appointment today, my doctor told us that our baby had a choroid plexus cyst on the right side of her brain that measured 5mm.  The doctor said that it is common and that we have to go for another ultrasound in 6 weeks to see if the cyst resolved.  Of course I want to know more about it, so I am googling (I know, not a pregnant lady's best friend) and it says it happens in 1-3% of pregnancies.  The scary part says that it could be a marker for Trisomy 18.  Has anyone else had an experience with this and have everything be normal?

Re: xp from 2nd tri: Choroid plexus cysts

  • My LO had 2 of the cysts in his 20 week ultrasound. They had come back at 32 weeks to check to see if they had disappeared and he was absolutely fine. No signs of either of the cysts! I wouldnt worry !!

  • Try not to worry... I know... easier said than done. My little guy had a CPC at an 18 week ultrasound. They also told me that it is a marker for Trisomy 18, but they also said that Trisomy 18 is very serious and there would definitely be other markers, so an isolated CPC is really nothing to worry about. I went back 4 weeks later at about 22 weeks and the cyst was gone.
  • My LO had one that same size at my 20 week ultrasound.  This was with a perinatologist.  He told me that while the cyst could be a marker for Trisomy 18, the baby had no other signs of Trisomy 18.  Usually there are a bunch of markers, and they're all pretty bad I guess.  He said that there are plenty of people walking around with these cysts, we just don't know!  I haven't googled because I know it would freak me out.  If there weren't any other abnormalities on the ultrasound, I wouldn't worry too much.
  • We also had them at our 20 week ultrasound but they had resolved by our second ultrasound at 24 weeks. All our other measurements, etc. on the 20 wk ultrasound were fine so the doc expected them to go away, but just wanted to check to be sure.  good luck - i've heard they are very common and do resolve on their own most of the time.

  • Same story here, they found one at around 18 weeks but by 20 weeks it had already disappeared. Try not to worry and stay away from Google!!! :)

  • Same thing- it was gone at our 31 week ultrasound. Our doctor said that it's a marker, but that as an isolated marker it means nothing. Still... it was a relief to know it was gone!

  • Same story here, DD had them at the 1st u/s but no other markers were found at the level 2 u/s. It cleared up on it's own and she's just fine. That 1-3% number must be really low because it is much more common than you would think.
