Re: your post about the solids poop.
Did you do Elinimation Communication? If not, what did you do? Was it actual potty training for good or just practicing? I am interested. DH and I make jokes all the time that Maya has to get potty trained ASAP now that she is eating solids causes the diapers are so bad.
Re: ***Howley***
Yup... EC.
We were potty training Dylan and because J was so young I was lugging him into the bathroom each time we went anyway.
I read a book called Early Start Potty Training because D started telling me when he was pooping before J was born (around 15 months). I was stunned and totally clueless about potty training.
The book covers potty training tips for all ages.
When I read the EC stuff I thought: "No way in hell does that actually work" but since I was in the bathroom already anyway I figured why not try it.
I was STUNNED when it worked. J peed the first time I put him on.
He was pooping almost exclusively in the potty by 5-6 months. His "tells" were easy to catch in time to put him on AND he pooped on a schedule you could set a watch by so he made it pretty darned easy.
I went back to work shortly after so we didn't keep up with the pee part very well but I had good luck in catching a lot of poops.
Not like we were diaper free any earlier (both out of diapers at 20 months) but I HATE HATE HATE changing poopy diapers and using EC I didn't have to change them as much with J as I did with D.
The way I looked at it was that I wasn't going to let my life revolve around getting either of them on a toilet but anything I could catch meant one less diaper in a land fill and one less diaper to buy.
I probably spent half as much $$ on diapers for J as I did for D over the long haul.
The book is an interesting read if you're curious about the subject.
One of the things it highlights is that the US has the latest average age of potty training in the world. It's not uncommon at all in other cultures to do EC or to have kids totally potty trained by 1 year to 18 months.
I believed all of the "signs of readiness" stuff because I hadn't read anything to the contrary. Turns out that I was potty trained by 2 and so were most of my peers back in the day before disposable diapers, pull ups and big business got involved in the whole business of when people potty train. Now there's a LOT of money to be made by keeping kids in diapers and then pull ups until they're 3 or 4 years old.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
Wow, thanks for all the information! We are using CD's, so I am not worried about the cost of disposeables, but it would be awesome to have her fully potty trained early.
I have always been curious about EC, but never really looked into it. DD has some pretty regular poops lately, and I bet it could probably work for us. Even though she is in CD's, it still would be wonderful to not have to rinse out poopy diapers. Plus, who doesn't want a kid potty trained early?
I read an article about how cultures all over the world routinely practice EC, and was talking to DH about that. He is on board with, if not initiating all of the decisions we make about DD, I'm sure he would be into this.
