if you don't eat meat...

...why? (I'm not judging, just curious)

Re: if you don't eat meat...

  • I was up really late one night when I was about 15 years old (I am 36 now) and on came a documentary about a slaughterhouse and it grossed me out so bad that I just couldn't bring myself to eat meat anymore. I don't eat meat, fish/seafood or poultry but I do eat dairy. After being a vegetarian for so long now it's just totally matter of fact for me. I do serve meals to my kids and husband that include meat so I am not opposed to preparing it..I just don't have a pull or desire to eat it myself. It just seems..for lack of a better word...gross.
  • For me, it is because I read a book. And then watched a move. Skinny B!tch and Food, Inc. Respectively. It sealed the deal for me. Meat makes me wanna hurl. And, really, most if it has crap in it that you just can not imagine. Did you know, that there is an ALLOWED amount of fecal matter in your meat? You are eating sh!t, and it is FDA approved. Fecking gross.

We now buy mostly organic, and I limit Ian's meat intake. He eats a lot of the "mock" meat, like chicken nuggets and crumbles.

I am trying to get DH to give it up also.

  • Also, did you know, that many chickens are injected with so many growth hormones, that they grow so quickly that their bones can not keep up-? The weight of the chickens can't be supported by their own legs so they can't even stand up, let alone walk. You eat this. Ewww.

    Ok, I will stop now.

This is true of all processed foods, cereal, crackers, etc.  It's not just meat!

  • yes, I saw food inc- ew! I dont eat a lot of meat, and try to buy mostly organic too... I could totally go veg but DH is a big time meat and taters guy.
  • I limit our processed food intake also! Although, I am sure I do technically eat some meat here and there. You know, the random grasshopper or mouse that gets ground up with the flour while my cereal is being made.

Did you know that there is an allowed amount of bug parts in a box of cereal? :D

  • I'd like to point out that most e-coli outbreaks come from produce and not meats. :)

  • We switched to mostly organic meat; it is all I buy. And ground beef is sprayed with ammonia to kill e.coli. And it has made people sick, too little or too much ammonia. But, on the flip side, there are issues related to eating too much soy, which is what the fake meat is made from. I'd you are predisposed, it can really mess up your thyroid. I really backed off the soy after I read some of that literature.

really!? I'll have to pass that on to my SIL. She's vegan/gluten free and has thyroid issues.
  • it just isn't necessary, imo.

  • And FWIW I actually sort of wish I could get past the ick factor. I actually am really intrgued by lobster...I need to get over it and just enjoy it because for some reason I think I'd really enjoy it. And when DH BBQ's it actually always smells good to me. I was hoping pregnancy would be the impetous to me craving meat and I was sort of bummed when it was not.

Which I guess means I do have a pull..just not one that can get me past the psychological factor. Uggghhh!

  • Ami- yes, google "soy thyroid." lots of articles come up. DH's brother had thyroid cancer (we think from a chemical in the water table). I didn't want to take more risk w/ DH. We eat soy, but not a lot. One of the cities in the US w/ the longest life span is Loma Linda, CA. It has a super high concentration of Seventh Day Adventists. Part of the religion is q heathly lifestyle, including vegan. They use soy, really it's lots of legumes, beans, etx

There is plenty of ethically-raised meat available.

    This.

Granted, I eat it.  But not a lot.  I could totally go veg.

  • I do my best to avoid most commercially available meat, but I still eat plenty of meat from better sources- mostly from small local farmers.

Ice cream and chocolate aren't necessary too, but I'm certainly not about to give those up either of those as well. ;-)

I posted before I read the whole thread.   Love you, Mel!

I agree with this. I was really close to vegetarian in college because I didn't like any of the meat available at the cafeterias. Although I'm sure I would have gotten some nutrient deficiencies if I didn't eat meat at restaurants, it was the healthiest I've ever been.

Being a vegetarian in a smart, nutritionally minded way, is exceptionally healthy, imo.  I do balk a little when people make their kids eat vegetarian though.  Kids just need so much more good fat and protein etc. that we do, I think it's hard to achieve that without meat, and I don't think a ton of soy is good for children either.

  • It was a purely emotional decision for me. I stopped eating meat for lent over 20 years ago after watching a documentary on the treatment of chickens and I haven't eaten meat since then.

    .
  • I'm only speaking for myself here folks:    I believe that God gave us animals to eat... that's fine BUT we have abused that privelage and the meat industry is all about making the most money, not about being decent to the animals.

So, in other words: meat from a family farm where the chickens run around free and the cows graze in the fields in the happy sunshine? Fine.

Meat from a d-bag who shoves as many chickens as he can into a stifling hot, tiny, wire cage just so he can get the most product out? No way am I supporting that.

And, since it's just easier to buy boca crumbles/burgers than it is to investigate where all my meat came from, I just eat veggie meat and call it a day.
