Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

AF before HCG zero?

Hi ladies.

I have a question to those women who may have had their first AF after miscarriage - do you know if your HCG levels were at zero, or can AF happen beforehand?

I m/c one month ago today and I am experiencing AF-like cramps. At last check with my doc, my levels were 99 two weeks ago, 25 last week (I have some retained tissue confirmed with two ultrasounds). Like many of you, I'm anxious for the first AF - especially as my doc believes this may solve my complications without needing a mini D&C.

Thanks for your replies!

  • I'm almost positive you can't have AF before your numbers go back to zero.  I read this online and I'm pretty sure this is true.  Mine came shortly after my numbers went to zero. It was about 3 weeks after the day i miscarried then it came.

  • I'm sorry for your loss. You may be down to zero already. My last m/c I was 65 one week and 0 about a week and half later.  I started my period about 3 weeks after going down to 0.  If I were you, I would request bloodwork to follow it down to zero to be sure.

  • First of all, sorry for your loss.  Like PP said, you may be at 0 now.  It could also be your body getting rid of remaining tissue.  Hope things work out for you so that you don't have to have further intervention.

  • I've had AF before my numbers were zero.  I got mine between 25-18.  My doctor has no idea why but that's what happened to me.  She also assumed that my next test would show zero but nope that's when it came back 12.  So it's possible although my guess is not probable

  • With my m/c in July, I got AF 2 weeks after my HCG was down to 0. I would ask for another blood test to know where you are at. Good luck.

  • Thanks for your replies, everyone. I have a blood test next week, and another ultrasound coming up. I guess the cramping I feel must be something else.
