VBAC

What are your thoughts on this? (Please)

The hospital where I had DD had a De Facto Ban, so I have asked around and decided to go with a hospital about 30 minutes away from where we live. However, the LC from the hospital where I had DD approached me today at ON while I was shopping and mentioned that they are now doing VBACs.

My CS was not a horrible experience, I just feel it could have been prevented if I had been given time and better advice. The nurses at this hospital are PHENOMENAL, the anesthesiologist was incredible, and I developed a close relationship with the LC there, too. I obviously have HUGE emotional attachment to that hospital. My only negative feelings are for the OB I had (he was so rude, pushy, disrespectful). Unfortunately, the OB who is doing VBACs is with the same practice as my old OB. I am hoping that the midwives will consider doing VBACs now that there is an OB there to back them up, but I really am hesitant to even consider going there because of him. My LC insisted that she (new OB) was amazing and worth talking with.

Just curious what your thoughts are and what you might do if you were in this situation?

  • I don't know what kind of time frame you are dealing with, but  I would at least talk to the new doctor, if there were a lot of positives at the old hospital (and it seems like there were) it may well be worth your while to check into the new doctor and see if you can develop a relationship with her as well. I would leave no stone unturned as far as the pursuit of VBAC, especially if there are more options becoming available. Good luck and keep us posted with what you decide!

  • I can't think of any reason you wouldn't at least talk to the new doctor before making a decision.

  • There is nothing wrong in asking for a second opinion. You might really love this new OB and it could work out perfectly for you. What else do you have to lose?
  • I would also talk to the new doctor.  That said, unless there was a pretty great chance that I'd get that doctor for labor, I'd probably switch practices (and if that meant hospitals, then hospitals).  I changed hospitals (and I felt pretty comfortable at the old one, so it was a bit of an adjustment for me) because I was subject to whatever OB was on call in my old OB's office, and I knew if I had my old OB there or a few of her partners that I'd be very nervous and I'd have some additional challenges from that.  Good luck with your decision~

  • Thanks for the great advice! I also think the new OB is worth talking with. I am concerned about what would happen if she wasn't the OB on call when I went into labor. I am not pregnant right now, but hope to be by summer. When I was pregnant with DD, I saw all the OBs at the practice. I'm not sure how this would work if she is the only OB doing VBACs at that hospital right now...
