Mixed HSG result-- I am not encouraged by what we saw

Well, I did my "why am I not pregnant yet screening" within the first 11 days of this cycle. So I say hooray for fast... not hooray for all the results.

Good news: CD3 bloodwork is good. Normal estrogen, FSH is 5.6 and AMH is 3.1.

Bad news: Only the right tube would open up for HSG (and man did it hurt when multiple attempts at opening the left were tried). More bad news: the dye spilling out of the right tube did not go all around everywhere, but stayed very localized around my uterus-- this would indicate pelvic adhesions are holding things in there. So, even if the right tube is open, it may not be able to "catch" the egg coming from the right ovary. Third piece of bad news: my uterus is off to my right side, WTF. Is it over there due to more adhesions?

Of course, my purusal of the internets are not encoraging. It is hard to "fix" pelvic scarring, and I am not so sure I can get insurance to cover lap surgery anyways, though I have suspected all along that I may have something going on in there. I guess the silver lining here is that if I decide to spend beaucoup $$ of my own money, then I could probably be a candidate for IVF.

I think the only good thing to come of this is that my insistence to go in for screening over what the DH thought was appropriate is now vindicated. Furthermore, maybe we can move on to doing something that will result in a good outcome before I get more things going wrong with me.

Re: Mixed HSG result-- I am not encouraged by what we saw

  • Hi Amanda,

I wish you the best of luck.  And while the results may not be encouraging, they aren't bad either.  As you put it, they are "mixed", and mixed means possibility.  I'm glad you did all the testing.  It's better to know what you're fighting.  Again, good luck!

I second this one!  Did a tech or the RE do your HSG? Do you go discuss the results at a later date? My RE is doing mine Wed morning. Fun..  This whole thing stinks.

An RE (though not the one I am seeing for F/U) did the HSG. One good thing about the way this clinic does things is that the RE was updating me throughout the procedure (uh, especially when she tried a few times to get the left tube to show itself-- serious cramp inducing stuff), and then we reviewed all the pictures together at the end before she took off. Before I left the office, I made an appt for Feb 1. to discuss the findings and to make a plan. Till then I am going to keep on trying...

I agree it stinks. I am having a beer or two tonight for sure. Good luck on yours for Wednesday-- I think if things are more or less normal in there, it should not hurt much. But don't forget to take your advil 1h before!

  • So sorry Amanda! That must have been painful and a very frustrating outcome. As you said, you'd be a good candidate for IVF so that is encouraging. I hope you get some more answers soon.

  • The good news is you haven't wasted lots of time and money on IUI yet. At least now that money could go toward IVF if you choose. I am sorry the news wasn't better for you!
