2nd Trimester

Mucus plug

I'm 24 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child. I do not recall losing my mucus plug with my first, so I don't know what it looks like. Last night I had a very thick string of discharge I had never seen before. It was not red tinged, but I'm worried it could have been a part of my mucus plug. Has this happened to anyone else and/or should I be worried about it?

Re: Mucus plug

  • I don't really know (not a doctor and this is my first), but I'm pretty sure that if it isn't red or pink or gushing you are fine.

  • Are you sure it wasn't just CM?  My Mucus plug, from what I remember, was a dark yellow/brown and had blood in it.

  • Could have been, but I've never seen it before with either pregnancy or anytime when I wasn't pregnant. It was yellowish, but no blood so I'm not too concerned.

  • It could have been. Mine was basically in the shape of a tube (my vagina) and was yellowish and looked like a giant booger and there was NO reddish color to it. I've heard that if you lose yours early, it may grow back. I would DEFINITELY call your doctor, though. Mine told me to call him when I lost mine, just to make sure that it wasn't too early as it could be a sign of dilation.

  • When i lost mine with Alex it looked like thick snot ( gross i know) and it was stained pink with blood.

  • Your MP will regenerate so losing it doesn't mean the onset of labor.  I lost pieces of mine over time at 24-30 wks and didn't have DD until 38w6d.   It freaked me out a little because I had a history of PTL, but it's not unheard of to lose parts of it early.
  • Discharge is normal... annoying but normal. When you get the red tinge to it, that's when it will be the plug. If you're still worried, call the dr, let them check.
  • Stringy discharge doesn't sound like the mucous plug.  Mine was very very thick.  It almost looked like rubber cement.  The stringy stuff sounds like plain old CM.

This, and it was like a huge slimy booger, like the size of my pinky.  Eww...  Sorry for TMI.

I lost mine at 37 weeks last time and went to 40 exactly.  Keep an eye to make sure you're not leaking any fluid, but I'd be willing to bet it was CM, it can increase in volume as your pregnancy progresses - pantyliners are your friend.
