Temporal artery thermometer

I saw in kme's post that several of you have the exergen thermometer that we have...can anyone explain how you use it?  I follow the directions on the packaging, but its so weird about how many times it beeps and when, and DS is a big wiggler when we use it, so i never know if its getting an accurate reading...

You just place it on the center of the forehead and press/hold the button. It beeps as it is taking its reading. You just move it across one side of hte head until you get to the hair line. Let go of the button and read it. It is ok if it doesn't stay in contact with the skin the whole time. If you are unsure if it is accurate, then do it again going the other way on the head. Another option if it is easier, is that you can use the artery behind the ear. You go just behind one of his ears and slightly down until you hit the artery (it is that depression behind the ear.) This is also accurate. Don't feel stupid, my mom got me turned onto it and she had to explain it to me and even show me on my neices so I was doing it properly.

honestly, i just use it as a pre-thermometer. if it shows that there's a temp, then i'll take DS's temperature rectally or under his arm.

Yeah Nicholas jerks his head too sometimes.   I need to practice more with it I think. 

I always end up using the rectal- which is a pain cause Nicholas hates it and I feel like I'm wrestling an alligator trying to take his temp.
