We started around 9 months with more table foods. Before that we did purees and simple foods like Gerber Puffs and MumMums. We also started yogurt at 8 months. At first the texture of the food would make him gag (or he would make really funny faces) but as he adjusted, he loved it. Pasta is still one of his favorite foods.
They were pretty late in the finger food dept (around 9 months). since they had a sensitive gag reflex.I always offerd finger foods and they always tried to eat them, but most of the time they would gag. I started with puffs, then moved to banana slices cut in quarters.
I gave them pasta around 11 months and they didn't really like it, i tried again a week later with mini wagon wheels and they couldn't eat it fast enought, they also love spaghetti. Those are the only two shapes that they like so far.

I'm thinking we started working on table foods at about 8 months. He really took to them so we introduced new ones fairly quickly. I remember giving him pasta while OOT for Thanksgiving, which would have been 8 1/2 months.
FWIW, we prefer small pene. At first I cut it up super small and gave it to him on a spoon. Once we started working on him feeding himself, it was easier for him not cut up. I was shocked that it didn't make him gag/ choke, but whatever!
Toast is still tricky for us - just turns into a gummy ball of mush. DS loves steamed veggies, esp. carrots and broccoli.
