Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Missed Miscarriage

How common are these?  I just had a D and E for our first missed miscarriage.  I am just still in total shock.  I went to my 12 week appt. thinking NOTHING was wrong only to find no heartbeat and the baby measure 10 weeks.  Will I ever understand or have answers?  Or is this just something that happens?

Thanks for your support.

Re: Missed Miscarriage

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. From the posters on here, sadly missed miscarriages aren't all that rare. I'm so sorry you're going through this. I'll be thinking of you.

  • First off, I am so sorry for your loss, I am in the same boat and it is heartbreaking!  I don;t have an actual;y statistic, but from all the posts on here and from reading in other ladies blogs/siggi's missed m/c's seem to be rather common.  From what my doc has said and research I have done on my own, for some reason whether a chromosonal defect or something else goes wrong with the pregnancy and it is no longer viable.  Sometimes it just takes a while for the body to catch on to the fact that things have gone wrong.  We had confirmed at our 8 week appt that things stopped growing before week 6, just waiting on the actual m/c part.  Again, I am so so sorry.  You are in the right place though.  The ladies on here are crazy supportive!

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.  Before my losses I would have thought from reading online that they were very unusual, but IRL I have had two myself and of the dozen-or-so people I know who've miscarried, all but two of them have had missed m/c as opposed to the cramps-and-bleeding we are led to believe are the hallmarks of a problem.

You may never have answers, but I hope you find some comfort soon.  It is a terrible experience Sad

  • I'm so sorry.  I had a missed m/c too, and it was a shock.  No signs of anything being wrong except that my symptoms had eased up a bit.  I have no idea how common it is.  Will they be sending the tissue for testing?  That might help you get some answers.

  • I'm terribly sorry to hear of your loss. :(  I completely understand the sense of shock you are feeling right now.

Unfortunately, missed miscarriages are quite common.  While your body recognizes that the baby isn't viable, it somehow doesn't know to begin the removal process right away.  Basically, your body gets confused.

I had a blighted ovum missed miscarriage diagnosed in December.  While my sac and placenta kept growing, there just wasn't a baby to support.  I started spotting right before my 12w u/s, so I sort of knew something was up.  But it didn't quite prepare me for the reality check at my scan.  Due to the holidays, my D&C appt. got pushed all the way to Jan.10.  However, I guess my body finally figured things out because I had a natural m/c the day before my appt.

Answers are hard to come by for a 1st miscarriage.  Pretty much every doctor I have asked has said it's just nature's way of getting rid of an unhealthy pregnancy.  It doesn't hinder your chances of conceiving again.  While it's not exactly the comforting words you and I want to hear at the moment, it is what it is.

Take care of yourself at this difficult time.  I wish you a quickly recovery.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.

I also had a MMC. I think they are pretty common.

  • I am so, so sorry. I understand your confusion, too - according to the internet, missed miscarriages are rare, so when I had my last ultrasound I was worried about placenta previa, cysts, or an ectopic pregnancy. I was totally shocked to find a seemingly health baby... with no heartbeat. The doctor told me that for missed miscarriages it's almost always chromosomal, so maybe it's the same for you.

I think one of the biggest problems is there's not much information out there. I went to the bookstore today to try to find a book about pregnancy loss, and found the miscarriage/infertility shelf full of books about menopause. What? The internet is misleading at best (obviously, or we wouldn't all think missed miscarriages were rare!) and the info from my doctor wasn't even that great. I am SO thankful for this board - and all of you on it :) - for being one of the few, REAL sources of info and support out there!

  • *warning*......DD's mentioned

Same as all these other ladies said.  Unfortunately missed m/c are pretty common.  I had NO clue either.  Went in for my 13 week appt. only to find no heartbeat.  Everything was great at my 9 week appt.  I guess the good thing with that is the likeliness of it happening again is low.  I still don't understand why this happened.  I had two healthy daughters before this one.  GL and if you need anything we are hear.  So sorry for your loss.

  • I am so sorry for your loss. The same thing happened to me two weeks ago. It is a truly heartbreaking experience! There are really no words, but time does heal. I am still sad but I am in a much better place now then I was two weeks ago.
  • Sorry for your loss and so sorry you are going through this.  I've been there.

I had a missed miscarriage in November.   Saw a heartbeat at 6 wks and at 10wks, went in for the NT scan at 13 weeks only to find out the baby hadn't grown past 10 wks.

I know that I will never have answer or really understand so I try not to dwell on the unknown because it will eat me alive.
