Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Sleep Schedule Problems

For the past week, DD has been waking up at in the middle of the night and staying up crying for a couple hours before going back to sleep. I'm wondering if she is just not tired and we're expecting her to sleep more than she should. Before this started, she was sleeping from 7:30 until 7. She would nap at 10:30 for about 40 min and at 3:30 for about 40 min. So, total she was sleeping about 13+ hours. How much is/was your 13 month old sleeping? What is their schedule? If we try and eliminate one of her naps, she's absolutely exhausted. Any ideas? TIA!

Re: Sleep Schedule Problems

  • I don't have a 13 month old, so I don't have a schedule to offer.  But instead of just taking away one of the naps, could you try moving the naps.  Maybe she is ready for one nap, but at a diff time.  Instead of putting her down for her fist nap at 10:30, try to keep her up an extra 30-60 mins and putting her down at like 11:30.  Maybe she'll give you a 1.5-2 hr nap and then be good for the rest of the day. She may just be a little more cranky while she adjusts to the longer wait for her am nap, but it may work out.  Just a thought, I'm not there yet though, so who knows if it'll work.  :o)

  • Lucas has been sleeping from 6:30 or 7 pm to 6 or 6:30 am....he still usually takes 2 naps around 9:30 and 2...they are usually 45 min to an hour and a half long.  Sometimes he'll sleep in until 7am on days he doesn't go to DC and we've tried just going to one nap between 11-12...but he ends up really tired and often wakes in the night.  I just think it may be kind of a weird time for them...very active but wanting to transition to one nap?  Sorry I don't have any answers but I think 13-14 hours of sleep is average for the age.

  • DD dropped one of her naps between 12-13 months, so maybe try to push her to go til 11:30 or 12 and then give the nap. She might sleep longer then too.

Also, maybe teething is bothering her at night?

  • DS is slightly younger, but he sleeps from 7p-6:30a every night. He also takes two naps for two hours each. At the babysitter sometimes he takes two shorter naps (one hour) or only one nap. Her son is 16 months old. He sleeps from 7p-7a and takes at least a 2 hour midday nap.

If I were you I would think teething and/or poor sleeping habit. I wouldn't reduce the amount of daytime sleep just yet- although I would consider only one nap if it was longer than 40min. We used the Ferber method, so if I experienced what you are explaining I would go back to that checking on him only after a certain number of minutes when he's crying.

  • DS went through a waking and crying period a few months ago.  We would actually have to turn on tv and he would settle down.  It was a phase and lasted a week or so.  Maybe look into night terrors also.  Good luck!
