Waking up crying at 4:00am..WWYD?

DS continues his no-sleep saga, 16 months strong...

He was sleeping really well for about a week, then starting last week he started waking up between 4:00 and 4:30 am crying. I let him CIO and he goes back to sleep within 15 minutes, but then only sleeps another 30 minutes or so (he has been up before 6:00am every day).  He is exhausted and crabby in the AM and sleeps in the car on the way to the babysitter's.

This morning I caved and brought him into our bed - he slept soundly from 4:00am - 6:30am - and woke up giggling :)

Anybody have any idea what is going on?  WWYD?

  • DD is famous for this - waking and then continuing to wake too early or in the middle of the night. I let her work it out. Yours are old enough to give you massive signals if something is really wrong. We, in our house, also talk with DD about how we sleep ALL THROUGH the night. "Dont get up until its light out", etc. It doesn't always work but at least she knows our expectations (again, not that she'd remember it mid-night when crying) and its a building block.

  • When my 18 month old wakes up in the middle of the night, I bring him into bed for a little snuggle. After 5-15 minutes, I take him back to his bed. If he starts to cry again, provided I think he's not poopy or starving, I let him CIO. Good luck!
