Glider vs daybed - Mostly for 2nd timers

I can certainly see the use of a glider in a nursery, but the expense is an issue. Especially in an area without Craigslist.

The nursery-to-be does currently have a daybed which I plan to leave in there for the first few months. I'd rather sleep in there during the every-two-hours phase than keep going up and down the hall. Plus there's no reason for DH to also be sleep-deprived. I'd prefer to trade off.

Seeing as how I can do all sorts of useful propping-up things with pillows on the daybed for nursing, etc, what are the odds it would be *that* inferior to a glider? How crucial is the rocking mechanism? I truly don't know.

  • with ds#1 we kept him on our room at first and I found i just could not nurse him in our bed no matter how propped up I was. It was so much easier to nurse him in a chair of any sort than in my bed. So you don't necessarily need to spend a ton of money on an expensive glider. If you have room you could just move another chair into that room.

  • I honestly have to say that I loved having a glider for DS.   We actually have one from Walmart that is still under 100 bucks and it really is great (we used free shipping from site to store).  Just the motion alone calmed DS down when nothing else worked.

  • I personally couldn't have survivied without my glider.  I did nurse in my own bed and it was fine, but between nursing/rocking, and just simply rocking that glider has paid for itself ten fold.

I didn't pay a lot of money for mine either.  I bought it use.  Check conseigment stores and places like Once upon a child.

You also wouldn't need a glider per se, you could certainly do a wooden rocking chair.

  • I have a very comfy love seat in our extra room right now.  I am just going to use that.  IF I decide that it is not working, than I will look into getting a glider.  But I don't want to spend money if it is not needed.

This.  We have a glider in DD's room and after the first few months I didn't need to nurse in it, but in the beginning it was the only place I could get comfortable enough.  Eventually I would nurse in bed or on the couch and used the glider for rocking her once in a while.  If cost is an issue I wouldn't say you HAVE to have one..sure it was nice but any sturdy chair would do.

  • With DD we had a twin bed in the nursery (it was a 2 BR house, so that was also the "Nana bed") and put the glider in another room.  We didn't actually use the glider that much, but the bed was invaluable.

  • i bought a second hand one at a consignment store and my mother and I are recovering it! i only Paid 45$ for it! it is in great shape but has ugly, ugly fabric!!! I have been told that it can make all the difference in nursing and soothing so i  wanted to make sure i had one!
  • We lived in DD's glider during the first few months or so. The rocking was important and necessary, for us.

  • I would get a glider or maybe go to garage sales and see if you can find a rocking chair.  You don't have to get an expensive glider or rocker, Walmart and Target both have decent prices on rockers and gliders.

The only reason we are buying a more expensive upholstered glider/recliner is because it will have fabric that matches our family room furniture and will be moved down there once we don't need it in the nursery.  For us it is more of a long term investment rather than just another piece of short term nursery furniture.

  • I liked the swaying, moving that a glider/rocker can provide.  But if you won't ever use it you won't know what you're missing.
  • I found the glider to be far more convenient than our couches or beds for nursing.  Yes, you can use pillows to prop the baby up, but it's a lot more work than just sitting in the glider with a boppy. The glider was my favorite place to nurse Zack and we still use it when he's going to bed or having a rough night. It was the best $250 I ever spent, honestly.

  • I am glad that we have a glider, but found it difficult to BF while sitting in it. I was more comfortable in the recliner in the living room. I wouldn't worry about it if you absolutely can't afford it.
  • FWIW-I hated my glider when DS was an infant. We had a spare bed in DS's room when he was born and I used to lie down and nurse. It was the only thing that saved my sanity because I was able to sleep while nursing (the horrror!)

It WAS nice to have a chair when he was older but I still wouldn't spend a lot on one.

  • I didn't buy a glider with DS.  I just didn't think it was a necessary expense.  DS slept in our room in his pack n play for the first 9 months while I nursed.  I didn't have any problem propping myself up and getting comfortable to nurse DS.  I never had an issue with it and I never regretted my decision to not get a glider.  I will not be using a glider with this one either.

  • We bought an upholstered glider rocker.  It was one of my best purchases.  It was comfy enough to sleep in.
  • I still use our glider every day, DD loves to be rocked before bed and it's invaluable to us when she's sick and needs comfort. You don't need to have one, but if you can find a great deal on one, I think it's worth it.

  • I could never nurse in bed. I just couldn't get comfortable. I found the rocking chair to be much easier but not all that comfortable. Even after I stopped nursing and would rock DS to sleep, the rocker was still uncomfortable. That chair is still in DS's room, we sit in it and read before bed. I'm going to buy a glider for #2. I want something more comfortable than the rocker and I see how much use we've gotten out of the uncomfortable rocker, I'm sure this will be much better.

  • I had a C-section and wasn't able to get comfortable nursing in bed or on my couch for several weeks.  I used a wooden rocking chair with a boppy.  We got a glider about 4 weeks in and we still use it.  In fact, I'm sad that DD won't have one in her room anymore after we set up the new baby's room.
