I can certainly see the use of a glider in a nursery, but the expense is an issue. Especially in an area without Craigslist.
The nursery-to-be does currently have a daybed which I plan to leave in there for the first few months. I'd rather sleep in there during the every-two-hours phase than keep going up and down the hall. Plus there's no reason for DH to also be sleep-deprived. I'd prefer to trade off.
Seeing as how I can do all sorts of useful propping-up things with pillows on the daybed for nursing, etc, what are the odds it would be *that* inferior to a glider? How crucial is the rocking mechanism? I truly don't know.
Re: Glider vs daybed - Mostly for 2nd timers
I personally couldn't have survivied without my glider. I did nurse in my own bed and it was fine, but between nursing/rocking, and just simply rocking that glider has paid for itself ten fold.
I didn't pay a lot of money for mine either. I bought it use. Check conseigment stores and places like Once upon a child.
You also wouldn't need a glider per se, you could certainly do a wooden rocking chair.

This. We have a glider in DD's room and after the first few months I didn't need to nurse in it, but in the beginning it was the only place I could get comfortable enough. Eventually I would nurse in bed or on the couch and used the glider for rocking her once in a while. If cost is an issue I wouldn't say you HAVE to have one..sure it was nice but any sturdy chair would do.

I would get a glider or maybe go to garage sales and see if you can find a rocking chair. You don't have to get an expensive glider or rocker, Walmart and Target both have decent prices on rockers and gliders.
The only reason we are buying a more expensive upholstered glider/recliner is because it will have fabric that matches our family room furniture and will be moved down there once we don't need it in the nursery. For us it is more of a long term investment rather than just another piece of short term nursery furniture.

I found the glider to be far more convenient than our couches or beds for nursing. Yes, you can use pillows to prop the baby up, but it's a lot more work than just sitting in the glider with a boppy. The glider was my favorite place to nurse Zack and we still use it when he's going to bed or having a rough night. It was the best $250 I ever spent, honestly.
FWIW-I hated my glider when DS was an infant. We had a spare bed in DS's room when he was born and I used to lie down and nurse. It was the only thing that saved my sanity because I was able to sleep while nursing (the horrror!)
It WAS nice to have a chair when he was older but I still wouldn't spend a lot on one.
