getting in shape post pregnancy-suggestions for the one who hates to exercise

i've never been one to exercise. i'm petite and thin, but NOT in shape!! and now post baby, I'm all round below...my belly and a$$. I put on some pretty victoria secret underwear yesterday and wanted to cringe. I go out in sweats and stuff because its so comfy but my mom said i really need to look nicer! ha!

so what do you girls do and when do you find the time? my LO is 8 1/2 months old, and she takes 2-3 naps a day but only 1/2hr to 1hr.

Please help! i want to find the time, energy and ambition!

Re: getting in shape post pregnancy-suggestions for the one who hates to exercise

  • I have to qualify this first by saying that I don't have children yet, but I am a firm believer in the importance of exercise. You have to make the time, whether you and DH come up with a mutually agreed time for you to head to the gym, or you hire a trainer to come to your house, or you use a fitness DVD a few times a week, or you join an activity.... The possibilities are endless! I am actually a little worried about this for myself, and I was sure to discuss with DH how important this is to me when I got pregnant. We have both agreed that we have to give each other time to maintain our physical health, so I think if you can make these small arrangements, then you should be able to get fit no problem.

Also, one more thing you should be thinking about is your diet. As my crossfit obsessed brother says, 'Abs are built in the kitchen, not the gym'. Try to reduce junk and processed food, and I bet your results will be twice as fast.

Good luck, and keep us posted :)

  • I know how hard it is to work-out post baby, but making time whereever you can is key.  I do like to exercise, but it was very hard to motivate myself when I wasn't getting sleep.  Also, I had two babies that had a lot of needs in the beginning, so I felt very overwhelmed.  I was alone (DH working a lot) and couldn't leave the house at first (they were on monitors, etc.) so I used free weights at home and came up with my own workout that I would do for a half hour when they took their first nap.  I would walk up and down the stairs repeatedly while talking on the phone for 20 minutes.  I would just come up with ways to keep moving while inside.  When it wasn't the middle of winter, I would make sure to go for a walk outside (once the babies were older and I could leave the house more easily).  Good luck - little steps and keeping a healthy diet will give results - promise.

  • I am petite and was thin pre preg, and hardly ever worked out consistently. I was "active", but didn't have a set workout routine persay - just kept busy hiking, walking, riding my horse and going to an occasional kick boxing/step/pilates class.

Now that I have baby weight to lose still, I have to carve out the time to exercise. Currently I have been working out 5 days a week. I'm doing the couch to 5K running program 3 days a week, going to Zumba twice a week and trying to get out to the barn to ride my horse at least twice a week.

Believe me, it is not easy to find the time to do all of this. I wake up at 4am for work and work 12 hour shifts four days a week. Most work days the last thing I want to do is jump on the treadmill, or drive myself to Zumba at the end of my shift. But now that I am into the habit of making the time to do it, it is becoming easier and easier.

You just have to have the willpower and motivation to get going. Good luck!

  • Its hard. I would like to hit the gym every day but instead I ask friends or family to watch LO a few days a week for an hour or so, so I can work out. I recommend weight training if you really want to reshape your body.
