Come on over to the Omaha nest and ask this question. A lot of us over there are CDing moms. You'll get a lot of good responses and we can help answer just about any question that you have.
A bunch of us are pregnant over there but since we've always been there, we just stay there. :-)
I use cloth and love it. check out circleme.me they have a great store in lincoln with many different kinds of cloth diapers. if you are a hands on learner they even offer cloth diapering 101 about once a month on a Saturday, might be worth the day trip to check out your options. I dont think there is a store like it in Omaha though i could be wrong. Their staff seems very informed. They'll even set up a registry for you that your friends can call and order off of. I live in Lincoln so they've been a godsend for me as I figured out the cloth diaper thing. My friends and family all thought I was crazy but we've saved a ton of money and just have a couple extra loads of laundry a week.
I CDed my first and plan to with this one as well (due next month). The best advice I can give is do your research on how to wash CDs properly. Washers are different. There are great sites that show what are the better detergents for cloth diapers and give tips on using a top load or a front load washer (because they wash differently, as I found out when we moved to our new house and I had to adjust how I washed in a front Load washer). Also, there are tons of natural tricks like putting them to dry in the sun (even through a window), that gets rid of stains and disinfect at the same time!
I really enjoyed CDing and felt it was way worth it!!! The eventual savings is great!! And now with baby #2 the savings grow even more! )
We used Dappi Diapers that I bought off Ebay. They are shaped/sized diapers with velcro (very similar to disposables) but you have to use a cover as well. We chose to go with plastic/rubber pants as covers, but you can use wool as well....We spent around $450 to CD til potty trained which was definitely cheaper than disposables.
You do have to commit to washing diapers every other day, but for us this was no problem!
Anyhow, there are tons of choices so if you can go to a demonstration of the different kinds I would say do so!! Good luck!
