Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Four days of passing clots normal?

From what I've read, it seems like many people have one or two days of heavy clots and then heavy bleeding.  I am on day four of passing heavy clots and it doesn't seem to be letting up yet.  The first day was the worst in cramps for me, but I still have constant cramping, just not as bad as day one.  I have an appointment on Tuesday and planned on running all this by my Doctor, but was just wondering if something I should be more concerned about and considering making a phone call on Monday.

Thanks, Lauren

Re: Four days of passing clots normal?

  • I really had only one day of heavy bleeding with clots so, I'm not sure. I think it may depend too on how you're miscarrying. I had a D&C so, everything was already supposed to be out. If you're doing natural, it may go on longer. If you're concerned though, I'd def call.

  • I had several days of clots/heavy bleeding as well. Once I passed the sac (about day 4 of the heaviness) it all kinda stopped for a few days. Then came back for a few days, but not as heavy. I am so sorry for your loss, I hope this physical part is over for you soon!

  • A phone call never hurt a doctor.  If you're worried, I think it's better to go ahead and call to get some peace of mind.  Also, my doctor insisted that I call if it was more than a pad an hour.  She said that if it was after hours, I could still call the office's main number, and the voicemail message will have a number to call after hours to get the on-call doctor if you have something urgent going on--the doctor could direct you further.  If you need to call today to get some clarification, I doubt the doctor will mind a five minute phone call, but if it's truly something that needs attention, you'll both be glad that you called.  If you decide not to call today, definitely call first thing on Monday.  I'm a big believer in peace of mind.  However, having said all of that, I bet things are still okay, as long as you're not in a lot of pain.  As the other ladies have said, everyone's experience is different.  For me, I started spotting on Sunday night, and then it got a bit heavier as the week went along.  By Thursday night I had some VERY heavy clotting and extreme cramping (I swear it felt like whatever labor must feel like)!  Then on Friday I felt okay with some bleeding, but then again that night I passed a major clot with about an hour of severe pain.  Yesterday I felt fine again and am still bleeding this morning.  Good luck to you..... :)

  • I am so sorry for your loss. I experienced almost five days of passing clot type material. I called my doctor just to be sure. I would call. They can always look into things for you, or at least put you at ease. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.
  • no clots for me anymore. that lasted the first two days. I am still bleeding but no nearly as much as before. the pain and cramps are actually worse for me today. i have been trying to decrease the amount of motrin that i was taking so that i dont hurt my stomach. But in trying to do that i have now worse cramps and lower back pain. so its back on the motrin for me.

i am have been trying to relax (which is impossible) and trying to not do too much around the house. DH has been very helpful.

    hope you feel better.

  • I haven't actually started bleeding yet,  but from the way my OB explained it, it could be multiple days of bleeding and clots.  Starting slow and getting heavier and then it eventually tapers off....  I hope you feel better and things can finish up soon for you!!

And to ask a question of my own... how long did it take people to start the bleeding and cramping and passing clots, etc?

  • Please call your doctor. I almost died from ignoring heavy bleeding and clots.
