Success after IF

I'm worried about ds poop.

I feel like a nut wanting something to be wrong w/ ds.  I don't feel like he gains weight like he should and have gone to a GI only to be told I'm an overworried mother and he's gaining at the  rate he should (given he was a preemie, etc,.)  even though he's low on the charts.  I was told to back off on "aggressive feeding".   Ummm...OK...I felt stupid.  He's still hates eating but I've learned to back off.

So, ds' poop has never been a proper color and I just passed it off to whatever he ate.  Well, now he eats a bit more table foods and still the same purees but his poop is most often a pale green.  Sometimes it's really pale.  I rarely see a brown poop.

I googled it and it came up as bile issues, lactose intolerance, hep B...all sorts of things and now I'm freaked out.  I'm almost embarrassed to go to the Dr b/c I feel like I'm always looking for something.

What does your childs poop look like?!   Am I crazy?!

Re: I'm worried about ds poop.

  • The color of poo is actually based on how long it has sat in the body, in addition to what he eats.  So, if the poo has been in the body for a while (like say from one day to the next), it will be more brown.  However, if he poos several times a day, so he's pooing out what he's eating shortly after he eats it, it will be more the color of what he eats.

That being said, Jacob's poo has been fluorescent green a couple of times and I'm sure that he's not eating something that is that color.

I know its so hard to not worry about his eating.  :(

  • Have you talked to the pedi about this? I ask our pedi poop questions every time we see him :) At her 18 month appt we talked about consistency, and he indicated that he is only concerned about consistenly mucousy stools, bloody stools, white or black stools. Other than that, he said color and consistency depends on what the child has eaten. He did stress that lactose issues typically cause mucousy or bloody stools (I had previously been concerned about that).

But I would definitely discuss it with your pedi. That's what they are there for, and it's better to be given an answer than sit around worrying (coming from the mommy who would definitely be sitting around worrying nonstop!) And for the record, I am at the pedi's office more than most and I'm the mom that is always asking weird questions about the most random things.... luckily I have a very patient and understanding pediatrician :)
