Baby Names

Matilda

What do you all think of Matilda? Is it too hipster-y? I think it's really cute, but our last name also begins with an M and ends with an A. Would it be too rhyme-y? None of the other sounds in our last name are like Matilda, so maybe it wouldn't be too bad. And I think Mattie is a cute nickname.

Thoughts?

  • It is one of the names that makes me cringe
  • I love Matilda. I prefer Tillie as a NN. does your LN also have three syllables? Its hard to say for sure if the flow is off without knowing your LN. Matilda Morticia is a little sing-songy, but Matilda Maya sounds ok. KWIM?
  • I like it, but it is definitely one of those names I would never really use. I can't pinpoint exactly why though. I'm not sure about it with your last name. It sounds like it might be a bit sing-songy, but it is hard to tell without knowing the actual middle sounds.

Also, I'm lol at Benjamin Linus on your boy list. Were you a LOST fan? ;)

  • Its cute, but I don't think I would use it. I can't see my DH agreeing to this one.

Haha, yes! We were figuring that by the time we have a baby (I'm not pregnant yet) that people will have gotten enough away from Lost. But it's just kind of a cool sounding name!

Good point. Our last name does have 3 syllables, so you may be right with that one.

  • Matilda was our girl's name so yest I like it. Our L/N is 2 syllables fwiw.

  • I really like it, traditional, yet kind of hip, but most importantly, not overdone.
  • I love it. DH's gma, ggma, and gggma were all named Mathilde, so it's definitely on our list. I like Tillie as a nn.
  • I like Matilda nn Millie

  • I think Matilda is precious.  I especially like the connection to the Roald Dahl book.  Mattie is very cute but might be confused with the currently popular Maddy.
  • I don't like Matilda. It just reminds me of a nerdy or ugly girl. JMHO
  • If my last had been a girl, he'd be Matilda.  NN Millie.  Love it.
  • DD is Matilda, so obviously I love it. We call her Tillie and even our Matilda hating friends and family (you'll run into a lot of haters with this name) love the nn. I liked how it was an uncommon name, but you knew how to spell it if you heard it and knew how to say it if you saw it, plus it fit the current trend of vintage names. The variety of nn options also appealed to us, since it will allow her name to grow with her.

  • I don't like the full name of NNs.
