If your abs separated during pregnancy...

what did you do to keep it from getting worse while you were pregnant and what do I need to do after the baby comes??  I am very anxious to get back into doing ab work, but have been reading online that certain exercises can make it worse.  Was your OB able to help you, or should I seek advice from another professional??

Re: If your abs separated during pregnancy...

  • I currently take a class called Restore the Core.  It is specifically for women who have just had babies (look it up at strollerfit.com)  During the first class, I was checked for diastasis (separation) and I have it.  The instructor then told me which exercises to avoid (anything twisting, big shoulder raises off the ground, etc) and how to modify all ab workouts to not make it worse.  I am going to check myself again in three weeks to see if there has been improvement.  Check your local area and see if there is Restore the Core class near you.

  • Moms Into Fitness Boot Camp (workout DVD) also talks about Diastisis Recti and helps you modify the workouts for it. I'm not sure if there is anything you can do to prevent it from happening.
