Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Introduction and a couple questions

I will be joining you ladies ladies on this board.  I have been luking for a while and have noticed how supportive and comforting you all are.

A little info about me.  I got a BFP on 12/31 after an IUI treatment on 12/18.  Over the course of the next week and a half, I took a few pregnancy tests that were just laying around.  At first they were getting darker, but then started to get lighter.  This just didn't seem right so I went in for more blood work and my betas have been decreasing since, today it was 11.  I had such an early loss.  I feel like it doesn't compare to what some of you ladies have been through.

This was my first pregnancy and loss so I have a question.  I have not had any bleeding or spotting yet, but I was on prometrium, which I know can delay this.  My doctor advised me to stop the prometrium.  Today, I would have been 5w6d.  When would I say I miscarried?  When my betas started going down?  When I start bleeding?

Also, I'm sure it varies from woman to woman, but how long does the bleeding last?    Also, is there a way to know when to expect it to start?  Is there a certain beta number?

I apologize if my questions (and/or wording), are "stupid", I kind of feel like they are, but I just don't have any idea what to expect.

Re: Introduction and a couple questions

  • I'm really sorry for your loss.

No need to apologize for having questions -- I think most of us don't know much about miscarriage until we have the misfortune to go through it.  I am not sure how prometrium affects when you start bleeding -- my betas were over a thousand when I started my miscarriage, and didn't get down to the levels you have until a week after I stopped bleeding.  The bleeding lasted about 6 days (2 heavy, then the rest was lighter).  But I was further along before the embryo stopped growing (about 6 weeks) and I miscarried at 9 weeks (that's what I tell people, because it's easier than explaining everything), so you might have less bood than that.

I would ask your doctor for more clarification about what to expect in your situation.

  • I am so sorry for your loss.

My experience was very different from yours, so I don't know how much help I'd be in answering your questions.  There's a really broad range of experiences on this board though and some amazing ladies.

I hope you find support and comfort here.  I agree with PP that a talk with your doc about these questions isn't a bad idea.

  • I'm so, so sorry for your loss.  None of your questions are stupid, and I don't think the length of your pregnancy should dictate the amount of pain/grief/sadness you feel.  My first loss was very early as well, but since we had wanted it so badly, it was excruciatingly difficult.

I dated my m/c as the first day of bleeding.  This time, I am saying 8 weeks, b/c that's how far along I should have been.  As for betas, they are different for everyone.  The first time my beta was only 14, and I started spotting the next day.  The second, my beta was around 30 the day before I started spotting.  I didn't have any bleeding this time around most likely b/c of the progesterone.

For my two early losses, the bleeding only lasted a couple of days, and then a few more days of spotting.

I hope this helps, just know that you are not alone, and the ladies on this board are a wonderful support system.

    My T&Ps are with you.
