We took my son to the ear specialist yesterday and found out he has mild hearing loss in BOTH ears

He will have to get hearing aids in a few months. To top it off he has ADHD AND ODD and is always in a lot of trouble at school. We finally got an IEP in place for him but that just started. He also was put on new meds and i called the dr. yesterday and had him taken off of them bc he has been very depressed and extremely emotional on it. that is not my son he is fun loving and always smiling and hasnt been like that with this medicine. I have been crying for two days straight now. It hurts me soooo bad to see my baby like this. I'm pregnant as well so that just helps my emotions out even more. I took him to school this morning and he just looked soo sad. I don't know what to do . I feel like this is my fault. I should have caught his hearing. I'M HIS MOM. Why did I not catch this????????? Thank you ladies for listening I really don't have anyone to talk to right now I'm at work and my boss and no one else Knows what I'm going through..
Re: Sad about my 7 year old :(
I'm so sorry you are feeling this way, but don't beat yourself up about it!
You may have considered this already, but could the ADHD and ODD diagnoses be related to the hearing issues?
I'm sorry to hear things are not going well, but hang in there, Mom!
I've worked as a teacher/tutor of kids with mild to moderate learning disabilities for many years. I have worked with many kids like your son who have multiple "co-morbidities" affecting their learning. Ultimately, getting the hearing loss under control will have a positive effect on the ADHD and the ODD.
Sorting out and getting meds balanced can be frustrating. A good doctor (whoever is handling this for you, whether it be your pediatrician or a specialist) will work with you to continue to adjust the meds so that your son is enjoying the maximum benefit he can with a minimum of side effects.
It's great that you're getting all these things sorted out as early as age 7. Second, fourth, and seventh grades tend to be watershed years for helping learning issues reveal themselves. It's much harder to solve problems effectively when kids are diagnosed at age 10 or 13. They're so much more flexible at 7.
Hang in there and keep us posted!
