I got a very scary phone call from the doctors office where I had my 20 week sonogram done. The doctor called and advised me not be alarmed but that they had found a choroid plexus cyst in my baby's brain. (of course i'm alarmed!!) He told me usually within a few weeks the cyst would pretty much go away on its own and because all of my blood work was normal, it shouldn't be a problem. Has anyone else been told this? I researched it and it sounds about right but you always think the worst because it can be a marker for Down Syndrome. My doctor told me to come in so we can take another look at it and discuss it a little more. I'm trying not to freak out, but I can't help it.
Re: Choroid Plexus Cyst
Hi, my baby girl had one on her right brain during the 18w5d big u/s. I went back at 20w4d for a repeat/follow-up u/s. In LESS than 2 weeks the choroid plexus cyst (CPC) was 100% gone.
Just to let you know what MY doc said about it, CPCs are in the part of the brain that creates, collects, and stores spinal fluid. There are NO brain cells there at all, and that part of the brain has ZERO effect on intelligence, personality, etc. CPCs are very common, they say most likely 100% of fetuses (and adults) have them at some point or another, we were just lucky to get it caught on "film" via u/s. They have VERY WEAK associates with chormosomal abnormalities, mainly Downs, but also trisomy 18 which is 100% deadly. HOWEVER< did you take the NT test, or do any kind of bloodwoork (1st or 2nd tri. screens?). If your bloodwork came back fine, they have NO association w/down's or anything else. My Downs risk was 1 in 20,000 and Trisomy 18 was like 1 in 8000, so 1 isolated CPC was not issue at all, it didn't increase my odds for anything, and again, the cyst was 100% GONE within 2 weeks!
It's a very scary sounding term, but everyone I've heard on this board or while I did my online research about CPCs, have had good outcomes- no issues, no health problem w/baby, etc.
I know it's anxiety causing and really scaring, but please know that we've been there done that, and all is well. I'm pretty sure you will have a positive outcome! Keep us upated though- the best to you and baby!!!
My baby girl has one. My bloodwork came back fine and they pretty much told me after the lab results came back that it was not even an issue and would likely have gone away by the next u/s.
I know it is hard not to worry -- I was FREAKING OUT after I found out, but have calmed down a lot after seeing how common it is.
Our baby had them at our 16 wk u/s, and my high risk doc told me the same thing... unless they are combined with other markers, or your bloodwork comes back funny, they are truly nothing to worry about. He told me that he had never seen them not resolve themselves by 26 weeks. When I went back in for my 20 wk u/s, they were gone.
FWIW, my first baby (who we lost due to Trisomy 18) also had them, but had about 10 other markers for a chromosome disorder. At that time, they also told me that the cysts wouldn't be considered abnormal if there weren't many, many other defects.
