TTC after 35

update on me

Today is 11 dpo and I have the usual sore breasts that appear before I eventually get AF.  So I do not have high hopes for the last IUI having worked. But I didn't have high hopes in any case.

In other and better news, we met with a new RE and we are definitely switching clinics for IVF, which we will do if this month and then next month (trying naturally for a change) does not work.  She was terrific -- very firm with me about my age and the fact that every month before age 40 counts (turns out, she and her husband, with whom she owns the practice, also struggled with infertility and ended up adopting; they include a video of them talking about this on their website, which is pretty amazing).  Her plan is to not worry about DH being around or not for fertilization since we still have 2 frozen vials of sperm, and they can use those to do ICSI.  She guesses that the reason the IUIs have not been successful is my age (she also said she would have had me on a higher dose of Femara than my RE did, and she would have always done the timing at 36 hours after the trigger shot).  And that's why she wants to go right to injecting the eggs with sperm to make sure fertilization happens.

She had me do a blood test called AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone) which she said is a new and even more accurate way of testing ovarian reserve than a CD3 FSH test (which my old RE did not do in any case); the great thing about it is that it can be done on any day of one's cycle which is why we could just go ahead with the test.  So I am nervously waiting on those results, because it is based on those that she will tell me what protocol I would be on, whether she thinks I would have any embryos to freeze, etc.

Meanwhile, DH is having to call our current clinic about moving his remaining two vials.  The two clinics are only separated from one another by about a block, but the only way to avoid a $500 charge from our clinic is for him to get a nitrogen shipper from the new clinic, go to the old clinic, collect his stuff, and take it back to the new clinic!

My only work now is to try not to feel badly that I didn't check out both clinics fully when I made my choice to get into all of this in the first place.  Oh well -- as my therapist reminded me, the whole thing is a learning proccess, right?

Holding out hope for more BFPs on this board soon (including my own).

Re: update on me

  • That's great news that you are switching RE's and feel better about how to proceed! I just had my AMH test (and lots of other bloodwork) this morning and am anxiously awaiting results along with DH's SA.  I'm envisioning your DH in a ghostbuster type of suit gathering his vials in the Back to the Future nitrogen shipper!   All of this is a learning process none of us ever wanted to learn but guess we have no choice. Good luck with the new doctor:-)

  • Thanks, McIrish! I have to say I am terrified she will call and say "the AMH shows you have no eggs left, sorry."  I know that can't be true since I have produced at least two follicles every single cycle.  But it's still scary! I'm sure you feel the same way.  Fingers crossed for both of us.

  • It's so great when you know you have a plan and there are still things to be done. Everything sounds very positive.  Sounds like your new RE is a little more aggressive which is good.  (IMO)  Good luck!  -Pix
