Tahoe Mamas - exercise question

Hi!

I'm almost sixteen weeks pregnant.  I ski and snowshoe around Lake Tahoe a lot; almost every weekend.  I live in San Francisco, but am a weekend warrior.

What is your take on exercising at high altitudes?  Some sources I have read say to avoid exercising at altitudes above 6000 feet.  I am very accustomed to this, however.  What do you think?

Re: Tahoe Mamas - exercise question

  • With my disclaimer that you should of course ask your Dr.  my opinion is that if you were doing it before you are probably find to continue.  Of course the concern is the higher difficulty of processing oxygen and ensuring that baby is getting a proper supply but since your body is very acclimated to it and it's something you plan on doing regularly I think that you'll be fine.  I would probably plan on scaling back the intensity of the walks so that you are not working hard to keep up your breathing but I'd be surprised if your OBGYN told you no way.

Maybe post on a Denver board or some place similar and see if those high altitude ladies had any admonishments from their docs to restrict activity because of altitude.
