Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

How many Sonograms did you have before a D&C

I don't have any bleeding or cramping or anything and I went in for my first sonogram (assuming everything was normal) and they told me the pregnancy was not viable.  We scheduled a D&C for tomorrow, but today we have had second thoughts.

After speaking with the Dr. and my husband we decided to wait until we do another sonogram on Tuesday to confirm that it's no longer developing.  I know we are probably just delaying the inevitable, but I don't want to look back and wonder 'what if?'

So my question is, did any of you have a D&C after just one sonogram (no bleeding or other symptoms of mc? Or did you confirm it with a second? Just want to get your input since my first mc was natural and my body made the decision for me.

Thank you

  • I think nothing but good can come from getting a second u/s.

You need to have complete peace of mind before undergoing a D&C. I don't really have any advice for you I naturally miscarried and saw our baby before my D&C, but if I were in your situation I would definitely get a second one.

  • I had 4... It was a LONG month.  Things were developing, but very little.  My first was 5w6d, then a week later, measured 6w1d with h/b of 103, then a week later 6w4d with h/b of 86, then this week, 6w1d, no heartbeat... I was supposed to be 9 weeks when all was said and done.

I definitely would want to be sure, but the waiting was SO hard for us.

  • I totally agree!  Definately get a second u/s or second opinion if you are not 100% sure.  Mine didn't have a heartbeat at 11 weeks and was way too small, so I ws 100% with just one u/s, but you should have absolutely no doubts.

I'm so sorry that you are having to go through this a second time.  I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers/

  • I agree that you really need peace of mind before a D&C.

I had an u/s three weeks prior to our m/c where we saw a beautiful baby, heartbeat at 174.

3 weeks later, I had a tiny bit of spotting one day, had an appt the next day to make sure things were okay.  The baby was 2 weeks smaller than it should have been and no heartbeat.  We scheduled the d&c for two days later.  I still had some doubts.  What if they're wrong?  What if the machine wasn't working right?

The next day I started m/c naturally and of course that convinced me that this was really happening and helped provide closure.

So I said all that to say - you should get a second u/s just for peace of mind.  It may or may not change the diagnosis, but at least you'll know.  Not being certain and always wondering what if would be so terrible.

    PGAL/PAL welcome

  • we had first one at 5w5d after spotting and cramping. both had low heart beats. then at again at 9w3d i was spotting and just kinda knew something wasn't right at then they saw neither one had a heartbeat. before my d&c i asked her to check with a doppler and still nothing which made me very at ease with the whole thing. But it never hurts to double or triple check!

  • I would get another sonogram done, especially if you are unsure.  I had two sonograms (on two different machines within minutes of eachother) and both showed no heartbeat and I just knew when baby wasn't moving around but I would have checked again if I was unsure.  Dr. also was using sonogram too during d&c(not sure if all dr. do that but that is what she told me after proceedure) and I trusted her that she would have told me if this baby miracuously had a heartbeat again.  GL to you!

  • My first u/s was suppose to be my 12w scan, but found out there was only an empty sac.  My doc diagnosed me with a missed miscarriage (but has now changed it to a blighted ovum), but sent me for a 2nd u/s to confirm that nothing was there.  My scans were done in two different offices, on two different machines, with two different techs, but their diagnoses were the same, so I was satisfied.

You need to be 100% sure before you do a D&C.  Get a 2nd opinion if it will bring you peace of mind.  Good luck to you!

  • It can't hurt to get a second u/s.  I only had one and then had a D&E that afternoon, and there is a small part of me that wonders if the tech made a mistake.  However, I know she showed the pictures to the radiologist, and I knew in my heart that something was wrong, so I believed her.

  • We had weekly u/s starting at 6 weeks (I was seeing an RE). Everything was perfect until week 9 when there was no heartbeat. That u/s was on a Tuesday. My RE had me come back the next day to confirm that they weren't missing anything. Then on Thursday they did one more u/s (while I was under anesthesia) before doing the d&c.

I am so sorry you are going through this (((hugs)))

  • I had my first U/S at 12w5d and had NO signs of m/c. There they told me the baby had stopped growing at 9w3d. I wanted a D&C immediately. I knew at that point if I had no signs of m/c they weren't comming. It was NYE so I had to wait 5 days for my d&e. I still had no signs of m/c but knew in my heart that it wa gone. I didn't need a second ultrasound. If you think it will make you feel better, then do it. I knew it would not bring me anything but more pain. I just wanted it over with.
  • I agree with all the PP's.  It can't hurt to get another one.  I had an u/s last friday, and I have one tomorrow to confirm.  And then I will probably go for a second opinion at my old OB's office just to make absolutely sure.  You need to do whatever you need to do, so that you are at peace with your decision.  Good luck to you.  T&P's heading your way!  So sorry you have to deal with all this... it's so not fair!

  • I had one. First did an external since I was supposed to be 10w3d, then switched to an internal. But I knew with the external when I didn't see the flickering of the hb or any movement. I had an u/s 4 weeks early at 6w3d and saw the flickering so, I knew that I had lost the baby. But I completely agree, if you aren't sure, then get the 2nd u/s to be sure.
