The nurse butchered me! WWYD?

So, on Monday I went for my baseline bldwk, the nurse who drew my blood isn't my favorite one there and for some reason she always hurts more then the others. This time she hurt me SO much that I was like holy cow! Well, when I got to work about 20 minutes later the area where she drew blood was swollen to the size of like a walnut which has since gone down but I have so much bruising you wouldn't believe its the whole inner crease the size of like a glass rim and it reaches all the way back around to my elbow!!! It's craziness..If I knew how to PIP, I'd put a pic up. Anyway, I go back friday, I'm scared I'm going to get her again, DH is adamant I say something..would you?

Re: The nurse butchered me! WWYD?

  • If you get the same nurse again, I would point out your bruise and ask her to be more gentle this time.  I'd probably say it jokingly so it won't come off wrong, but you should def say something.

FWIW, the first time I went for b/w the tech gave me a heck of a bruise, too, although it didn't hurt.  A couple of days later, another tech drew my blood and noticed my bruise and promised to be extra nice....and she was.

  • I'd say something.  I adore the phlebotomist @ my RE's office; she could get my vein blindfolded!

  • I'd say something- actually I did. This happened to me and my DH. We let someone know and they had us take a picture and fill out a report. She is not allowed to do our b/w anymore. It's your body and your money! Speak up! You don't need any added stress!

  • have you asked for a butterfly needle? not sure it will help, but you never know. I insist on those, so much better! but, yes, I would say something... even if it is just pointing out your bruise or showing them the pic from when it was bad to show the severity of it. good luck and I hope the next one is a breeze :)
  • Definately say something!!!!!  I'd specifically request not to have her again either.  Your poor arm!

Yes, please say something next time.  There is no excuse for a person drawing blood to be rough with patients.

  • I would say something! If you're having such a negative experience with her, surely you aren't the only one.  If she needs more training or whatever so she does not continue to traumatize patients, it's not going to happen if nobody says anything.  At the very least, you won't have to worry about her any more!

  • YES! I would call the practice admin just to let her/him handle the problem. This happened to me and my sister, who is an RN, said anyone who knows what they are doing does not create bruises during this process unless there is an extraordinary circumstance. Sounds like she doesn't know what she's doing and she requires more training.

  • If the phlebotomist is having a difficult time drawing your blood she should have asked someone else to try.  Your arm may have been the size of a walnut because she did not hold pressure very long after drawing your blood, as well as being rough. She needs to learn from her mistake.  I think it is best you say something.

  • YES i would!! and i did! the usual lady that drew my blood started hurting me a year into it and so i told my regular nurse and now when i go in i have this one lady draw it, and she doesn't even draw in that area! as soon as she sees me she just takes me back and boom, i am out pain free and bruise free (i am a big bruiser, so it's great that she doesn't bruise me!)

    good luck friday =(

  • i'd definitely say something and i'm sure you'll still have the bruising so they'll be able to see it.

My nurse who drew blood on me for the first time said my vein rolled which i think i actually felt when she put the needle in b/c it felt like a pop. blah. anways, she had to try again on my other arm w/ a smaller needle.  when i go back tomorrow for b/w you better believe i'm going to remind her to use a smaller needle.
