Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Hemmoraged today (warning: TMI and Long)

So I've posted a couple of times, but I'm mainly a lurker.  However, I found the advice here to be so helpful and the support so great, that I'm here again to tell my story once again.  Friday I had a D & C at 10 weeks 1 day.  THe baby stopped growing at approximately 7 weeks.  I had no bleeding and the D & C went smoothly, or so I thought.  On Monday, I get a call from the OB saying they couldn't find any placenta tissue from the D & C so they need me to come back to check and see if there is any remaiing tissue.  On Tuesday morning, I find out that it is ALL still there, the placental, the fetal sac, everything.  They prescribe me cytotec and tell me that it will pass naturally that way.  I picked up my prescription but had no idea what Cytotec was all about, so I did a google search and then freaked out by what I found.  I was home alone with my two D.S. while my husband was at work.  I decided I would wait till he got home after work for me to take the pill.  Well, by 6:00 that night, I had started naturally bleeding (like a regular period) so I figured I was going to pass the baby naturally, so I ended NOT taking the cytotec.  Fast forward to this morning when I woke up at 5:00 a.m. and passed a bunch of tissue.  I thought, okay, this is almost over!  Well, I kept on bleeding and having to change my pads.  I continued to get ready for work, but something didn't feel right with the amount of blood I was passing.  I ended up calling my OB and they wanted me to go to the ER.  I drive myself to the ER thinking I may be overreacting and maybe I'm not bleeding that much.  I arrive at the ER, get out of my car, and I literally SOAK my pants with blood.  30 seconds of gushing blood, all over my pants, my shoes, dripping onto the pavement.  I freaked out and started crying.  Thankfully, there was a nurse on her way into the ER who helped me in and got me into the ER.  I spent the whole morning bleeding like crazy, more ultrasounds, and then they gave me cytotec to STOP the bleeding, or reduce it.  I am still bleeding quite a bit, but was discharged and now am resting at home.  I have another u/s tomorrow to make sure it is all gone and I can move on from this nightmare.

Thanks for listening (reading!)

Re: Hemmoraged today (warning: TMI and Long)

  • Oh my goodness!!  I hope you're feeling better.

I am shocked to hear that your d&c was such a failure!  Did your doctor give you any insight into why it went so terribly wrong???

My story is somewhat similar to yours.  I started my real m/c (I've had some false starts) in the early, early morning of this past Sunday.  I had pretty bad (but manageable with tylenol) cramping and bright red bleeding.  Well, by 2am, I was soaking through a pad within 30 minutes.  By 3am, I was soaking through a pad (underwear and pants) within 10 minutes.  I spent a lot of time on the toilet, dripping, dripping, dripping.  I did some internet research, but every site said "heavy bleeding" was normal.  I was freaking out!!  By 7:30am, I was in the ER and I was given a room right away, even though there were other patients waiting.  I bled all morning until about 11am.  I was given meds to open my cervix (they thought I would need an emergency D&C).  But with the help of an ER doc, I was able to pass the placenta and sac and other tissue/clots.  Then I was given meds to stop the bleeding and saline to help me recuperate from my blood loss.  The gynecological resident who came to examine me in the ER said the non-stop bleeding was due to my uterus NOT contracting back to shape on its own.  I suspect that is what happened to you.  Eventually, my bleeding stopped and I was deemed okay enough to be sent home.

It was such a traumatic experience for me, so I can imagine it was worse for you (especially the failed d&c and the whole parking lot situation!).  I agree it was a horrible nightmare!  My doc called me a "strong woman" for going through what I went through ... so that makes you an even stronger woman!

I wish you a speedy recovery.  And I am sorry to hear of your loss.  (((HUGS)))

  • I am so sorry you are going through this.  I can totally relate though.  I had a bleed out several weeks after my delivery.  I just never stopped bleeding after the delivery, nothing too major just a pain in the butt.  And then about 7 weeks post, I had a day like you had.  Everything just let loose.  I was at work and felt something gross and ran to the bathroom where there was a constant stream of blood into the toilet for 10-15 minutes.  I seriously thought I was going to pass out and die in the work bathroom.  I headed to the hospital where it continued to happen every couple of hours.  So scary, but they got it taken care of.

I hope your appt tomorrow goes well and you can move on quickly Smile

  • I'm so sorry!!  I really feel for you.  My M/C was similar.  I was told it was going to be like a heavy period, but it seriously looked like a crime scene in my bathroom.  I couldn't believe that I even had that much blood.  I hope you are feeling better.  It's really scary.

Get plenty of rest, lay in bed for a few days!

  • I'm so sorry that your experience was so bad. I couldn't imagine. I hope with a little rest and time that it'll get better.
  • Thanks everyone.  I had my f/u ultrsound today and everything is now gone.  Yesterday was such a traumatic experience and I had a breakdown about 15 minutes ago, realizing its finally over.

I'm exhausted from the blood loss, but thankfully I am off of work until next Tuesday to recouperate.

  • (((HUGS)))  I am so sorry you had to go through all of this.  I went through something similar with out the D&C though.  I did wind up having to get a D&E after 5 weeks of bleeding and in and out of the ER.  Glad to hear you are home healing.

This happened to me too!  I held it together all through my visit to the ER, but after coming home and finally getting to shower, I broke down and couldn't control my tears.  Come to think of it, I didn't cry when I found out, so I think the dam finally broke and the tears were from my loss, my scary ER experience, and my heartbreak.  My u/s is this afternoon ... hopefully I will get the all-clear and this chapter can be closed.

    Wishing you a speedy recovery!!
