A good friend of mine has been dealing with IF for 4 years now. They recently relocated and started seeing a new RE. They are dealing with pretty severe MFI (the husband is a diabetic and has a few other issues) and she's always been 100% adament that she was totally fine and all of their issues were his.
They did something like 7 IUIs with their old RE and never got pregnant. This new RE recommended a lap to check for endo because apparently they were having trouble finding her left ovary and she had some other symptoms. She didn't want to do it but I talked her into it because I've always had a feeling there were other issues.
She had her lap today...she has no left ovary or tube, her right tube is severely scarred and not connected.
How on earth was this missed? Did their first RE and their new RE not require an HSG? I'm totally blown away. No wonder their IUIs didn't work..:/
I'm totally shocked. They were already planning on doing IVF w/ICSI soon so obviously that will bypass the tube issues but still, wow...
TI, IUIs, IVF = c/ps and BFNs
Re: Oh wow, a friend's story
OMG! that really shocks me how something this severe was never caught!! That makes me mad.
does she live in Florida? I am convinced that all of the REs down here are totally incompetent!
The things that happened during my testing blew me away too. But this is just rediculous! She should call them and threaten to go after them for malpractice if they don't return her money for all of those IUIs (were they OOP?).
History of IF and 2.5 years TTC. The day we were to start our first IUI we received a call that changed our lives forever and 10 month old Olivia joined our family. Shortly thereafter we got a surprise BFP and baby 2 is due July 5, 2012
5 REs + 3 surgical hysteroscopies for septum/lap + 3 failed IUIs
IVF w/ICSI/AH & acu = BFP!, unexplained spontaneous m/c @ 8w2d (our little girl),
FET w/acu = BFP!, B/G twins!, lost MP @19w, dx w/funneling cervix @20w,
twins nearly lost to IC @21w, saved by rescue cerclage, 17P & 16w of bedrest
Our twins born @36w4d via CS when A came foot first
Thankful for every day
I think my eyes about popped outta my head and my chin hit the floor reading this! How awful. My heart aches for her and her DH. All of that heartache of IUI for what?omg. I don't even know what to say!
My last RE never required an HSG for my IUI's. And now knowing what I know about the test I can't believe everyone struggling doesn't have to have this done before anything. It explains so so much! Huge hugs to your friend!

I had (they are now removed) blocked tubes, and you ovulate the same way if they are blocked. The egg is just absorbed. But I can not wrap my mind around the fact that they never noticed a missing ovary!! WTF!

Yeah, it just all seems so crazy. Something doesn't add up to me, though, because I know of the clinic she used to go to (I have another friend back home that goes there as well) and they are a very reputable clinic..I know she had monitoring during her IUI cycles and I also know this clinic does (and to my knowledge requires) HSGs so it just doesn't add up to me at all.
I can't imagine that they'd let someone talk them out of doing an HSG because all of their presented issues were MFI but, I guess, who knows...
TI, IUIs, IVF = c/ps and BFNs
But no way for the missing one, right? UGH this poor woman!
holy.mackeral. that is *shocking*. total negligence by, at the very least, her first RE.
how is she taking it? poor thing must be devastated.
I had a friend at the clinic I went to that her RE forgot to test her and suggested IVF with ICSI based solely on her DH's MFI. Turns out she was hypothyroid and got pregnant on her first cycle on Synthroid.
Even good ones make mistakes-but this is a HUGE one, and I'd be demanding my money back.
I'm not sure, I haven't talked to her, DH talked to her husband. I'm hoping her husband was mistaken or something, that maybe they said they had to remove the ovary/tube or something. I don't know, it just seems so strange.
