Wedding ring substitute?

I was talking to a new-mommy friend of mine the other day and she asked if I had been looking at any "wedding ring stand-ins" yet.  Ummm.... I didn't realize this was something that people did, but I guess I never really thought about it either.  Apparently, when your rings don't fit anymore you buy a cheap-ish substitute in a larger size to wear until they fit again.  She said she didn't want people thinking she was unmarried and pregnant.  I never even considered that my rings wouldn't fit in the near future, but I guess it happens?

Has anybody else heard of doing this?  Has anyone actually looked at rings yet?  She said she got hers at Belk in their sterling silver collection, I was just wondering where to look if/when I think about doing this.

  • My mom said that she had to get hers cut off when she was pregnant. So, it might not be a bad idea!!!!!

  • I've started taking mine off at night because I woke up a few times with them so tight it was painful. But so far, I've been easily able to slip them back on when I go to leave the house. One night I did forget and went out to dinner with hubby. I felt so SCANDALOUS him wearing a wedding band and me not. I'm sure I'm the only one who noticed.

  • I have been looking at replica ascher cut rings at www.emitations.com but haven't had the need... yet. My rings still slip and slide on my finger especially during winter. Not sure if it'll be the same during spring!

  • Mine still fit fine... and my mom never had a problem with this. If they don't fit, I won't wear them. I don't plan on taking them to the hospital anyway. I really don't care what people think. Already I wear my e-ring on one hand the wedding band on the other and I do get looks, and people can deal. I have had so much happen this week NBR that put a lot in perspective, and whether or not others think I am married is not a huge deal to me. Plus, I don't wanna buy something I don't need. It seems wasteful...

  • DH bought me a gorgeous pearl solitare (hopefully the baby's birthstone!) for Christmas one size bigger than my ring size.

I'm wearing it on my right hand on a bigger finger for now, but I know if I outgrow my wedding rings I can switch it. And I'll keep wearing it after the baby is here as a mothers ring. I adore it!

  • My wedding ring is getting tight and I can't get my solitaire on in the morning anymore :(  I just ordered this as a fun stand-in: https://www.emitations.com/celestialbluering.html

My solitaire is a marquise cut and I've been wanting to get it reset sideways (my mom's marquise is set that way and it's gorgeous - very unique), so I thought I'd wear this one for a while and see how I like it.  If I need to get my engagement ring resized because my fingers don't shrink back, I'm considering having the stone reset sideways.

  • I always take mine off at night, because I have very sensitive skin.

My wedding ring is actually way too big - I only had my engagement ring re-sized, so it holds my wedding ring on my finger!  So this won't be a worry of mine.

However, when I went to Europe last summer, I bought a cheap ring to take instead of my real rings, because I didn't want to travel with anything expensive.  I got it at Nordstrom Rack, so it wasn't totally crap jewelry but nothing fancy.  It turned my finger GREEN!

So I coated the inside with clear nail polish, and then it didn't turn my finger green anymore.

  • I've been debating this myself.  I really want to keep wearing something on my wedding finger because I already look 14.  Without wedding rings, I'll really look 16 and pregnant.  I originally thought about wearing my rings around my neck on a chain but both my husband and jeweler thought I was nuts because of the risk of losing them.  They still fit just fine now, but I may just go get a cheap stirling silver ring to wear once they don't fit anymore.

  • I've heard of people doing this, but I didn't with DS and won't this time either.  I don't care if people think I'm married or not.  I know I am.

  • My MIL bought me a ring substitute for Christmas. My rings still fit just fine, but my BFF is a month ahead of me and hers are getting pretty snug. The one my MIL bought is brushed silver, has 3 hearts (she said to represent me, DH, and LO), and says Love on the inside of the band. I thought it was sweet. If my fingers do get too fat for my real rings, I'll finally take them to get redipped (the white gold is looking a little yellow underneath) and soldered together.

Exactly!  I had a lady in the grocery store today ask me if I enjoyed having a snow day out of school, and if I was driving my parents crazy being home... seriously??  I'm 28!!  I haven't lived with my parents in 10 years!  I know some people don't care what others think, and I admire them... I think I'm just too self conscious and don't want to deal with looks and questions from busy bodies.

  • I would be really bummed if I had to take off my wedding ring (haven't since the wedding- it's just a really simple band), but if I did, I would probably take the excuse to buy a silly substitute. No, I don't care if people think I'm married or not, but I think it might be fun for a month (or two or however many) to have a fun fake ring.
  • I had to do this with DS. I ended up buying it at around 12 weeks but did not have to wear it until around 16 weeks. It could have also been b/c it was hot in May and I was swollen. I ended up wearing it up to 4 weeks after I gave birth to DS. I just got a sterling silver band. This time around it seems my rings still fit, for now...

  • One night last week I couldn't even get my rings off.  I kept them off for a couple of days.  I may buy a cheap something to wear until the baby is born if I am not able to wear my own.

Same here! At my last job random people would tell me all the time that they didn't realize I worked there because I apparently don't look old enough to work.
  • I got a cheap one from Kohl's with DS.  I'm talking about $10.  I would check any store that sells costume jewelry.  I never really needed it with DS but I bought one in case I did.  I don't know if I will buy one until I need it this time.  I was lucky the first time and never really swelled at all.

  • mine actually feels loose due to the colder weather right now.

If it ends up getting too tight later on I may just get a cheapie band to wear for a while..

  • Oh yeah, I've been in my temporary ring for weeks now.  $20 at TJ Maxx, and I get so many compliments on it I actually feel guilty and end up just telling them it's fake!  lol
  • My fingers actually shrunk during my last pregnancy and I think they are doing so again.
