Constipation help for infants

The Prevacid is constipating S2. As of last night, he hadn't gone for 3.5 days and I could tell he was uncomfortable.

Is there anything I can do for him? I'm doing baby massage with him daily, but it's not enough.

He's 2 months old, so I'm not sure if prune juice would be OK this young.

What have you tried, and is there something that would:

1) work for someone his age

2) can be given on a routine basis so that he can be more regular

Thanx!

Re: Constipation help for infants

  • I would call your pedi and ask.

I tried warm water. Warm prune juice. And even corn syrup for my babies issues at that age. But all under the advice of their pedi.

What about taking a rectal temp? And microwaving a dry wash cloth and holding it on his belly?

  • DS was constipated at that age just by breastmilk.  His pedi advised rectal temp and then diluted prune juice if he was uncomfortable.  If he felt fine and acted fine, to leave him alone.  Prune juice sort of worked.  The best "cure" was a short, gentle adjustment from our chiropractor.  Worked fast.

After that, DS only pooped once a week for ages.  It was always a crazy crazy blow out too.  So gross!

    Good luck!

  • We tried it all, the corn syrup worked the best.

This is what worked for us as well. Your pedi will be able to tell you how much to mix with some warm water.

  • DS got constipated around that time, too - not sure what it was but poor little guy was passing really hard stools. (TMI?)

I'd have to look at the email to remember but the pedi recommended a couple things. However it resolved itself before it became a chronic issue. It was a weird phase. DD never had that problem.

  • Thanx! I've never heard of the corn syrup solution. Interesting.

I just emailed our pedi. Let's see what he says. I am super, SUPER nervous do stick anything up his backside, so I'm trying to avoid that if possible.

  • At that age we used Karo dark syrup.  I want to say it is one tsp for every 2 oz... Could have been tblsp though... Def ask your pedi.  It definitely helps but you shouldn't do it every day for more than 2 weeks according to my pedi.  They didn't want me using prune juice until 3 or 4 months though.  It works like a charm though and can be used more regularly!  I think the issue is that they don't want LOs filling up on "empty" calories since they need all their food at that age and prune juice will take the place of some food.

Warm compresses on the tummy will help too, in addition to the massage.
