Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

TTC immediately after a MC?

Hello ladies. I experienced a MC yesterday unfortunately. It would've been our first baby. My question is, would it be terribly unreasonable if DH and I started TTC immediately- even before my next AF? I heard that you still ovulate about 14 days after a MC and it's very possible to get pregnant once again, expecially if you were very early on (I was only 5.5 weeks). We were so happy when we found out we were going to have a baby. Is it true you are fertile approximately 2 weeks after?

Re: TTC immediately after a MC?

  • I'm sorry for your loss.  I also had an early natural m/c @ 6 weeks.  It was also my first pg.  I wanted for AF and then luckily got pg 6 weeks later with twins.  So maybe it's true, but I don't know for sure.  Good luck when you decide the time is right.

  • First of all, I am so sorry for your loss.  I understand you are eager to try again, but you really should make an appointment with your doctor to make sure you are okay and to find out if you need to wait to ttc.  I also had an early miscarriage, but my doctor still wanted me to wait one cycle...which I did. Good luck.
  • I'm sorry for your loss. I've also read that you can ovulate as soon as two weeks after a m/c, but that it may not be advisible due to the state of your uterus/lining/hormones post m/c, since you obviously want the next one to stick.  The best results are usually with conceiving w/in six months, but you might want to give yourselves a little more time.  GL.

I would ask your doctor - it depends on your MC...but probably, it is safe for you to try again, because it was so early.  They usually suggest waiting a month so that there is an LMP to go by to date the pregnancy.

You might ovulate in 2 weeks; it might take 3 or 4.  This means that if you do get KU this cycle, you'll have no idea when to test. You should start charting your BBT so you can pinpoint ovulation and therefore have some idea when conception might have occurred if it does...if your doctor does give the ok to try again immediately.  (Fertility Friend has a great tutorial about charting).

All of this, and I am sorry for your loss.  The TTC timing is very dependent on you, how far along you were, and what your doctor says.  We were at 8 1/2 weeks, and technically 9 when I miscarried, but the gestational sac was only at a 5 week size and the HCG levels were pretty low.  The miscarriage was complete an uncomplicated.  I am guessing that yours was also, since it was so early.  The doctor said we could try again right away.  Theresa is right though about the timing, it is difficult to say when conception occurred when couples try again so soon, so I would chart if I were you, and definitely call the doctor and at least express your wishes.

  • Well I just got back from seeing my OB and she told me to wait after at least one menstrual cycle. DH and I are so eager to start again and this was just discouraging. She said that it will "help regulate everything and rebuild the lining and if I got pregnant too early after a MC, it would put me at risk again." Is there really some truth to that?

  • My OB told me that we should not TTC right away.  She said it's best to wait because of the state of your uterus/lining/hormones post m/c.  She said the hormones alone would be too intense if you got pregnant immediately following a m/c.  After my first m/c she recommended we wait 1 cycle.  After my second m/c she recommended we wait 2 cycles.

I do not know for sure, but I will tell you that I got pregnant the 2nd cycle after my first m/c & lost that one as well.
