You shouldn't breastfeed while taking any benzodiazepams, the exception sometimes being klonopin. This site says if the benefits outweigh the risks- then do it. I personally am staying away from all of them until LO is weaned.
I took ativan for years for a fast acting antianxiolytic, it worked great and helped me sleep on those nights I was having trouble. It should be taken on an as needed basis for a short time period, so they say. I took 3 (.5 mg I think) daily for about 4 years and had no addiction or withdrawal but I'm lucky.

I took it for a very short time at the peak of my depession/anxiety issues. I was told I could not breastfeed. I had to pump and dump for the week I took it and I week after.

I took it during the worst of my PPA/PPD, when DD was about eight weeks old. I was breastfeeding. I knew there were risks, but I felt like it kept me out of the hospital and thus it was worth it for us. I needed something that helped right away, and it did. That being said, I've probably only taken about 5 doses (.5mg) in my life... just for those first few days.
